Little by little and perhaps all at once (trollbots and reichwing media stooges and owners) the whuttabout and bothsides fog of these debates will finally lift. People of good will and cheer will go “huh. I guess the billionaires don’t get a whole side of their own just because of what they own.”

And then that circumstance shall be remedied, cries of “so unfair” and threats of inflation, war, and penury ignored because they are so clearly full of shit and their ill gotten gains are indefensible.

Speaking of global warming, there is another Ed Zitron screed out, this time about AI company Anthropic's pending IPO (https://www.wheresyoured.at/exit-liquidity/). He notes that Anthropic omitted any discussion of Q3 financials from their S-1, although they have the numbers and have disclosed them to some investors, privately. Q2 showed a net profit and they had $100+ million in cash as of Q2 end. But what does it look like now? If it got better, you think they'd say? Longer term, they have fixed-dollar, non-cancellable commitments to buy compute capacity from data center operators, those payments stretching out years and amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars. But the S-1 mentions that their massive revenue growth is going to slow at some point (may in fact already be slowing). Also that their customers could defect. Microsoft, for example, which is a large customer, is developing its own AI models and has said they want their Anthropic spend to go to zero. Then there's all the unprofitable AI startups in their customer base, practically all of which are are risk of going under if their money spigot from VCs and the debt market dries up, as is already starting to happen. The end will not be pretty (https://www.wheresyoured.at/exit-liquidity/). Ed has noted earlier, too, that private companies are going IPO later now in their growth cycle, which means that the retail shlubs buying the IPO have, as a result, less upside. Or, as could happen, no upside at all.

Oh shipmates, shipmates. If a tall, fair, blue eyed man comes across a hole in the wall Spanish bar called “El Vikingo”, do they:

a. Walk on by,

2. Have a drink to be polite,

iii. Pile in like it was a monastery in flames?

Agree completely with Mrs. Bowers's comment. :D

It's tough work but always worth doing. Because greed and spite are very expensive, but it is a price (like that of bigotry) many people love paying.

The trains in Spain crash mainly on the plains.

Yikes, but they do have their problems with something that can only go in two directions.

paperlesstiger's avatar

Spain's high speed rails had zero fatal crashes since they started in 1992, but they have had two this year. Suspect foul play.

Goin Green's avatar

To err is human...

To crash two high speed trains together is incompetence.

One high speed, other not, but potato, patatas.

I remember the old National Lampoon joking about how "dumb guys and sissies" could be persuaded on a dare to let firecrackers go off in their hands.

Which one does JD qualify for? I vote "both."

I'm given to wonder if that sonofabitch is a masochist.

He repeatedly demonstrates that he's desperately STUPID and aligns himself with LOSERS.

SethTriggs's avatar

Well no wonder this rented propagandist simp can't even order a donut correctly! He's not only horribly fake, he's just an ignoramus. I say this often but clearly this guy is just a bunch of prions drunk-driving a skinsuit!

That gets processed into beef that Trump tariffs.

Which tariffs Trump then lifts to import said beef to combat rising meat prices caused by Trump's other stupid decisions.

Which causes pain to American ranchers.

Whom Trump then tries to placate by bribing them with our tax money.

And round and round we go.

It's government by appeasement. Government by the ample seat of Trump's pants.

And THAT's why we're enabling the destruction of Earth's environment. For no actual reason at all.

The world should value this rainforest enough to kick some money down to Brazil and Lula Government...

GiggleSnort's avatar

Trump, like Bolsonaro, is a proud anti-environmentalist. The mere idea that anything might slow down exploitation of resources for short-term gain is offensive to them. Also offensive is the idea that any of the extractive industries would bear any of the environmental costs of their activities. Of course, they also deny, in public at least, that negative environmental consequences like global warming exist.

SethTriggs's avatar

They won't be here for the consequences; they want to enjoy the largesse they get now! And leave the rest of us holding the bag to enjoy the Miasma, Pestilence, Calamity and Destitution that they leave for us.

From Raw Story

The president accused Democrats of trying to “defraud, confuse, and obfuscate the Election,” and claimed the maneuver would take votes away “from the REAL Senator, Dan Sullivan.”

1) as opposed to mythical and abstract Dan Sullivan

2) the GOP has pulled these kind of shenanigans in Pennsylvania since Bush (the first 1).

Speaking of Vance having negative charisma, I really enjoyed Seth Meyers' dig at him the other night.

Carlos Nobre, Lula “will have four more years to save the Amazon,”... Might need a bit more time...

A mixed, sustainable economy ain't easy and selling beef and lumber is

The opposition is mean, venal and backwards, naturally and by design. Avaricious stupidity is selected and taught, then rewarded.

On a personal note, aggressive a1 autocorrect and autofill isn't even a step backwards, it's adversarial, it's confrontational and it's remarkably unfit for purpose. "You're part of our pitch to investors whether you like it or not!"

There are some damned smart people down there. There’s a community of violin bow makers who are not only bringing the pernambuco tree back from the brink of extinction, they’re establishing new reclamation techniques while making middle class livings.
