Okapi! Baby! Love the socks. The gods must have been drunk that day, tossed some DNA in the primal pool and said, "What the heck. Let's see what happens." And declared it good.

When the DC area is not disgustingly, hot and humid, I’m going back to the zoo. I lived across the street from the zoo for eight years in the 70s and 80s. Now that I live in Maryland, I don’t go often. I was there two years ago at the zoo security office to renew my Smithsonian badge. I did see and video Hank and Lola the binturongs. Lola bit a veterinarian this year - I don’t blame her. I’ve thought about biting my doctors.

My sister drug me all over that zoo because she wanted to see a moose. I was bursting pregnant and it was in late July.

Andrea's avatar

It is up and down hills so difficult in good weather without being pregnant!

Bobathonic, Dingus Crusher's avatar

Did she see a majestic møøse?

TootsStansbury 🇺🇦's avatar

Nope. No moose at our zoo; if any city deserves a moose and squirrel exhibit, it is our once fair DC.

Mind you, møøse bites kan be pretti nasti . . .

"I would accept Paris, to see this river they’ve been liberating from its concrete prison!"

I wrote a little guidebook to Paris for friends who kept asking me about what to do and see there. I always told them to check out Paris's "other" river, the Marne, with its bucolic willows and riverside "guinguettes," old summer dance halls right out of a Renoir painting.

But I didn't know then about Paris's other "other" river until coming across a stupendous book, Jacques Yonnet's "Enchantments sur Paris," also entitled "Rue des Maléfices," and published in English as "Paris Noir: Secrets of a City." The book has a curious subject: the eruptions of the occult in times of war, here focused on WWII Paris and largely on the Resistance within the city under the Occupation. But its setting is the neighborhoods along - or rather above - the Bièvre, running mostly secretly under the Left Bank aside from a few glimpses one can get of what seems to be a gutter here and there. Amazing book; I think about it all the time. It reads like a mystery itself.

This federal judge ruled against Trump. Then the threats began.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The pizza delivery was strange. No one at U.S. District Judge John McConnell’s home had ordered it. But it was the name on the order that shocked him.

Daniel Anderl.

McConnell knew what he had to do. He called Esther Salas, a fellow federal judge in a different state. He told her that he had received a delivery in the name of her son, who was shot and killed in 2020 by a disgruntled lawyer targeting Salas.

Such deliveries would be made to federal judges in at least seven states, but McConnell was the first to tell Salas, and both were distraught. Who would use someone’s dead child to threaten and intimidate? “I don’t think anything disturbed me as much as that did,” McConnell recalled.

For McConnell, the pizza delivery was part of a wave of threats unlike anything he had ever experienced and signaled a new era for federal judges.

That changed dramatically starting early last year. McConnell, 68, received credible death threats. A MAGA activist doxed his daughter. Two Republicans in Congress started impeachment proceedings against him. An insurance company even canceled McConnell’s homeowner’s policy (the insured party was too risky, the firm indicated, with an attached link to one impeachment effort).

When asked about Trump’s personalized attacks on judges, a White House spokeswoman said such opinions are a form of free expression. The implication that Trump sharing his thoughts about judges is “akin to making threats is deeply unserious and should be dismissed by anyone with half a brain,” Abigail Jackson said in a statement. “No one understands the dangers of political violence more than President Trump,” she added. “The Trump Administration cares deeply for the safety of all members of the Judicial Branch.”

“You better tell little motherf---ing Judge McConnell, I don’t know who the hell he thinks he is,” the caller said. “I wish somebody would f---ing assassinate your a--.”

I'm happy to report, in a qualified manner, that the Pgh Wonkmeet is quite close to my apartment building (such an understatement). So close, in fact, given the walk signs and traffic, it might take me as little as 40ish seconds to walk from downstairs outer door to the meetup site.

Still somewhat struggling with myself over anxiety issues vis-a-vis the Wonkmeet. That stated, I believe it's important to myself that I do go, and do the opposite of "don't meet your heroes" as I've been following Wonkette nigh-religiously since (thinks back into the edges of time/memory) circa 2011 (pre-Shy-Editrix romance/rattle-the-heavens, to be honest). Literally, not shitting you, that bar is across the street NE-wise from my building.

I may be shy. I may be overly effusive. I never know, honestly, but my VA provided crazy pills, AHEM, happy pills have been so far very helpful and calming. So I'm steeling my will and socialistic strength to visit whether quick or long. Lady Becca is such an inspiration, Shy the luckiest human on the planet, and Donna Rose our last, best hope for the next generation!

Pirro will go I’m pretty sure. And may I posit that if they had not gutted the Dept of the Interior then they probably would have gotten to the conclusion a lot sooner. However it was clearly a botched job from jump street and to automatically cry wolf and threaten severe punishment for vandals, then there would not be whole skid mark on the case to begin with. Coming out guns blasting only wasted ammunition. AND made her look like a braying ass.

I feel for the troops on that ship. Its torture clear and simple.

He knows you are a failed LOWLIFE, and he wants to pick up where you have left. For thousands of years, the concept of Communist Policies have never worked, and they’re not going to work now, especially under the tremendous transformational SUCCESS that the Trump Administration has brought forth, for the entire World to see and follow — Best Economic Numbers, EVER, Best Trade Numbers, Best Export Numbers, Biggest Investment in our Country, and on, and on. This is the Golden Age of America, and a small group of misfits, like you, Abdul, and others, won’t be able to destroy it, and change the course of History in so doing. Some questions about Maine:

1. Why so many cannabis shops?

2. Where are all the Black people?

3. Are lobster rolls considered a tourist thing?

4. A handful of Collins campaign signs on the roads but none for Jackson?

PrimerGray's avatar

1. You should cross the border from Rochester, NH into Lebanon, ME. There is a dispensary literally on the state line and like 4 or 5 within a few miles on rte 202.

2. Lewiston

3. No.

4. Jackson has only been the nominee for a couple of weeks. It's only August but people are aware of what the dilly-o.

Diane's Less Hostile Username's avatar

I wonder if there are as many pot shops there as in OK. I have like 6 within walking distance.

Maine's Black/AA population is only something like 7%.

The Wanderer's avatar

I have two dispensaries within a half-mile.

Diane's Less Hostile Username's avatar

I wonder how close the nearest one will be to me when I get moved.

Tecolote's avatar

OK leads the nation in cannabis shops, per capita.

Diane's Less Hostile Username's avatar

Yeah, I've read that there are more dispensaries in OK county than in Denver and that there are more in OK county than all of California. They are pretty much all crammed into towns. There are only 1 or 2 on I-35 at the Texas border and there really aren't any in the Panhandle.
