If Washington DC, the only part of the continental United States that currently gets no actual say in the legislative branch of government, got full statehood and/or congressional representation. I miss Wayne Gilchrist. Moderate Republican who the Eastern Shore loved because he supported hunters and agriculture and the west-shore Democrats tolerated because he supported environmental causes relating to the Bay. Andy Harris just makes me sad.
Ah, hell - I was writing a rant about how Andy Harris only reflects the benighted asswipes on the Eastern Shore, but decided that a rant is not snark. Anyway, when Maryland Democrats gerrymandered following the 2010 census, they eliminated the wrong republican-represented district. Fuck the Eastern Shore - cede it to Delaware!
I can't imagine our Forefathers being okay with any US citizens anywhere being disenfranchised by politicians who don't give a damn if they lived or died 99.99% of the time. But then again, I don't regularly snort powdered bits of the Constitution while regularly being blown by desperate interns, so what do I really know about what the Forefathers envisioned?
I live in Andy Harris' district, specifically in Harford County in between Baltimore and the Susquehanna River, where some say the Eastern Shore begins. The article pictured below was in my local newspaper this morning. I facepalmed at it. I'm so glad Wonkette picked up on Andy and wrote an article on him. I live about 15 minutes from the town hall where that meeting and the "marijuana incident" took place.
I should point out that I was once in the same district as Garrett County - Maryland's westernmost county, way out in the mountains - until 2013, around the time of Obama's second inauguration. Now I'm in the same district as Maryland's easternmost county, Worcester County, which is where Ocean City is located (and of course that's Harris' "Eastern Shore district" that's the subject of this article). However, Harris' district goes as far west as the Carroll-Frederick County border, meaning it almost reaches the mountains. Before 2013, my house and the Bel Air town hall were actually in separate districts. The district Bel Air used to be in is a Democratic one. Today, that district doesn't go past the Aberdeen Proving Ground area. Gerrymandering sucks.
