He definitely identifies with white people who don't like being told what to do.

I don't like being told what to do either, nor do most people. But I'll be damned (possibly literally) if I'm willing to be on the wrong side of history.

OK, if that wasn't irritating enough, here's Kristoff in the Evil NY Times yesterday, worrying that liberals are getting too "cocky and self-righteous" after having been right about everything Trump was doing for 4 years. "Research suggests that what wins people over is listening, asking questions and appealing to their values, not your own."

I guess he missed the memo about how we have no interest in "winning over" violent racist anti-democratic assholes. We only have an interest in making them a disempowered minority forever.

Damn, there was a time when Kristoff was a useful voice. Long, long ago.

Speaking of elisions, you skip over and ignore numerous forces that have worked in the other direction. The narrative of the Democratic Party's failure to be liberal enough is a nice, simple, easily packaged one, and only the tiniest bit complete bollocks.

Remarkably, what we're seeing in Biden (of all people) is activism on an FDR level, and on behalf of FDR's entire enterprise - expanded, by the way, to reach far beyond the populations with whom FDR was concerned.

I dream of a time when my fellow progressives will rise up and remember that neither Clinton nor Obama functioned with the massive Congressional margins enjoyed by both FDR and LBJ. I'm not holding my breath, though. Federal politics is a game of negotiation and strategy; but righteous narratives prefer flaming swords - even if they are pointed at the wrong people.

if just one of these clowns acknowledged the massive impact of GOP vote suppression I could at least assume their intentions are good.

Wow. I once thought Matt was a good progressive voice, but this is just idiocy run rampant. It's "these things don't bother ME, so let's not do anything about them".

Also, I was not aware Abraham Lincoln had been canceled.

FDR and LBJ also operated in a time before Fox News and the right wing media propaganda machine, which has only grown larger in the last decade+ thanks to social media/online content in general. It's a lot harder to get consensus to pass sensible policies that will actually help people when about 30-40% of the country is living in an alternate reality. A reality in which a publisher deciding to stop publishing 6 books is MUCH more important than, say, addressing the ongoing pandemic and the resulting economic devastation. They can't even agree on what the actual problems are, much less the solutions.

My daughter and I noticed recently that every episode of House Hunters (and the various spin off versions) is rated G, except the ones featuring a same sex couple, which are all rated PG. So, whenever a new episode comes on, we wait to see what the rating and cross our fingers that it's PG.

I prefer the research that suggests it’s a complete waste of time to try to win over deeply stupid people, especially when they are motivated by anger and malice.

Why would we ever want to listen to Republicans about ways to achieve electoral success?

For one thing, they don't want us to achieve electoral successes. They want us to fail.

For another, they never practice what they preach to achieve electoral successes. They don't run to the center. They don't consider incorporating the other side's ideas into their policies to win over those voters. They cheat. That's all they do to win. They sure aren't telling us to do that.

Oh, and he also ignores that GWTW is actually a lousy movie. Wonder how he feels about Birth Of A Nation.

While I don't agree with Yglesias, I do agree mostly with marshwren as (and I get SO tired of having to point this out) the Democratic Party of the US is a centre-right party, while the Republicans are blatantly far right. And while Boden has done some very good things, the real hope for the Dems are The Squad and their associates.

Note that the Dems in power, and this includes Nancy Pelosi, did everything they could to prevent AOC from winning her primary when she first ran, and have done similar things with other true progressive candidtaes. Fortunately the people are WAY MORE FUCKING PROGRESSIVE THAN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.

ADDENDUM: Put the word 'mostly' in the wrong clause initially.
