Thank you so much for this, Stephen. It would be a great idea if this (thoughtful, informative, analytic, loving) tribute were to become one of articles that Wonkette reruns annually.

I'm surprised I haven't seen more references to her as a Buddhist practitioner. I've been familiar with her as someone writing articles fairly regularly in Buddhist journals. In the video, where she was talking about agency and critical thinking, I kept expecting to hear something more explicitly Buddhistic. But, she said what she wanted to say.

I'm not sure what bible you're reading. Good christian women are supposed to submit to their husbands. And no leadership in the church either. And beating your slave is okay, as long as you don't put an eye out or anything too nasty.

bell hooks is the best.

I first discovered her in 1983. I never learned, I guess, that her first book was only 2 years old at that point. I'm not saying I **understood her** in 1983, but that was the first time I read her. Because I was so young then, and because her understandings were so far beyond mine, she seemed always to have existed, to have been established before I was born. It's funny to learn even now, when I've read quite a number of her books, that this establishment was only 2 years old when I first came across her in my bookstore, looking, as I always was, for something new and interesting and social to supplement my YA and sci/fi purchases. For no reason I can really articulate save that the book seemed "different" and likely to introduce me to ideas I'd never yet met, my non-fiction quota of one book a month was, one rainy month which could have been anytime between late September and late May, filled by bell hooks.

Although I paid full cover price for the book, I've been in her debt ever since.

Berea College is a very interesting liberal arts school. It's for poor kids, no tuition but they all work.

2021 continues to deliver its punishments. This one hurts a lot. I have quite a few of her texts. I will have to re-read. Her work stands the test of time and is more relevant now than ever in this mad world we live in. May we not forget what she revealed to us.

Rest in power, bell hooks.

She was wonderful, I think I'll do some re-reading. May her memory be a blessing.

Honestly, I was completely ignorant about bell hooks and her achievements, which I regret, after reading about her and listening to clips, like the one in this post. At least the publicity surrounding her passing will enable a lot more people to become acquainted with this remarkable woman.

"What is it about where we are now where you can be selling really rot gut sexist bull" and want to call yourself a feminist? The entire discussion is excellent. Thank you.

Just read about that young player who shot 6 or so people then himself. His brain was so advanced with his disease from getting hit. He'd been turned into a maniac really tho he didn't want to be. He received no care bc of some legal reason. It's just as if the game stripped away the non-aggressive part and he had a gun so he used it. He didn't have to tackle the innocent dr and his family. And he was innocent too, really.

Might as well look at what developed in Liberia. A rich young man from there told me all about it once. Freed slaves sailed there and enslaved the residents. I guess they couldn't help themselves.
