Ta, Robyn. Glad I'm way too old for this shit, but I support women and girls no matter their age, socioeconomic status, religious affiliation if any, and political leanings.

With the creeping fascism and anti-abortion sentiment in the Texas legislature, I wouldn't be surprised to see Abbott trying to control travel in both directions, as least by women. As some prescient people suggested a few years ago, walls can keep people in as well as keep people out.

Corollary:

A government powerful enough to prevent you from having an abortion is also powerful enough to force you to have one.

Boojum's avatar

Absolutely. It is also true that the Constitutional rights that would protect the right to abortion are the same rights that protect the right to refuse one. It was not that long ago that State mandated sterilization was a thing.

Maybe we can convince them to take back Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and Southern California.

Suze the Witch's avatar

Not New Mexico, please!

Hey! NM is a great state, and votes blue besides!

Boojum's avatar

Much of Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and Southern California might be in favor. Who could blame people in Texas, at least?

I think it might be a better way to succeed as a nation to learn from Mexico's progressive laws than to try to keep out Mexicans and refugees who passed through Mexico from other countries

Viva La Raza! Viva los Estados Unidos Mexicanos!!

This will probably have an impact on immigration as well - fewer women with small children fleeing from abusive partners, fewer men coming up to the US to earn money to send back to their families because they and their partners will have more control over when to have children. Of course many of the migrants coming through the southern border are just passing through Mexico from other countries in much worse shape. Still, economic prosperity and gender equality in Mexico is good news for everyone.

Mexico is really gonna need to Build the Wall (TM)….

…from their side to keep the US wimmins out.

I believe Mexico as a country is far, far more religious than the USA, and *they* legalized abortion?

Surely there are some religious leaders in Mexico that can explain to our esteemed evangelicals how abortion is not in conflict with Christianity.

Anti-Social Socialist's avatar

No, actually. According to the article, they *decriminalized* abortion. It's not the same thing.

Eileen's avatar

Problem being that our esteemed evangelicals are programmed NOT to listen to explanations of ANYTHING "concocted" by mere laymen.

Especially brown ones.

And our RW Catholic hierarchy that prioritizes oppressing women over social justice

Carstonio's avatar

Temperance advocates before Prohibition fell into two groups - suffragists who said drunken men were neglecting their families, and nativists who equated alcohol with Catholic immigrants. But overall the issue was generally white Protestants versus everyone else. The abortion issue might be headed in the same direction, white evangelical Protestants versus everyone else. The divide isn’t over whether abortion is wrong but whether it should be legal.

Carstonio's avatar

I had the impression that abortion was illegal in California before Roe and that women routinely crossed the border for the procedure. Maybe Abbott wants those cruel barriers along the Rio Grande to work both ways, stopping not just refugees from coming north in but pregnant women from going south.

Bupkus231's avatar

It was ( mostly ) illegal up until 1967 - when Governor Ronald Reagan signed a law allowing it for non-viable fetii ( except those with birth defects - ??? )

What frustrates the shit out of me is how the rules are different for each party. Even Democrats apply the different rules without even realizing it.

Take the 14th amendment for example. Everyone, including Democrats has suddenly become a constitutional scholar and says yeah, the 14th amendment technically says Trump is ineligible BUT it’s too vague and non-specific so we can’t use it. Using the 14th would be a grave mistake and open the door to too many slippery slopes. We have to defeat him the old fashioned way, with votes!

Ok. Now take Biden’s age for example. There is no Amendment whatsoever that makes Biden ineligible based on his age. People who say Biden’s age is a major concern are completely pulling shit out of their ass. There is nothing in the constitution that makes him ineligible. There is no medical evidence that suggest he can’t be president. That is completely a subjective opinion.

And yet no one on the left is going full constitutional scholar and defending Biden’s right to run. Why is that?

Your average American understands law roughly as well as they understand cardiology or astrophysics. Elections are about the court of public opinion.

SkeptiKC's avatar

The United States ought to be ashamed of themselves for this. As the rest of the world progresses forward into the 21st century America appears intent upon social regression.

Old Man Shadow's avatar

By contrast, only 25 percent of evangelical Protestants hold that same view

_________

Their leaders needed a new "moral" stance since Segregation no longer polled well. "Save the babbies" did though and it just so happens that the same judges who would deny women their human rights would also deny minorities their human rights too!

What are the chances? Hahaha...
