Woman Lawyer Won't Get DOJ Job Because She Hung Out With Women Lawyers
Jessie Liu might be happier where she is ...
Earlier this month, Donald Trump nominated Jessie Liu for associate attorney general, the number three spot at the Department of Justice (or whatever it is they're doing under Trump). Now Liu has withdrawn her name from consideration because it was discovered she's freely associated with nefarious characters known as "women."
Dinosaur painting collector Mike Lee, who someone let on the Senate Judiciary Committee, reportedly opposed her involvement with the National Association of Women Lawyers. Is Lee aware that Liu herself is both a woman and a lawyer so it's not the craziest connection? Here is NAWL's diabolical mission statement:
The mission of the National Association of Women Lawyers is to provide leadership, a collective voice, and essential resources to advance women in the legal profession and advocate for the equality of women under the law. Since 1899, NAWL has been empowering women in the legal profession, cultivating a diverse membership dedicated to equality, mutual support, and collective success.
Lee's big issue with NAWL is that it's consistently supported abortion rights. Liu was vice president and president-elect of the organization from 2005 to 2006. This apparently means she has personally performed abortions herself. During that period, NAWL also opposed Samuel Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court. It released a letter, which Liu did not sign, stating that Alito "is not qualified to serve on the Court from the perspective of laws and decisions regarding women's rights or that have a special impact on women."
The right-wing blog Power Line said the ladies at NAWL "complained" about Alito's absurd argument in Planned Parenthood v. Casey that "married women should be compelled by law to notify their husbands of their abortions."
POWER LINE: As NAWL's vice president, Liu must have known about her organization's position that Alito was not qualified for the Supreme Court and about the letter it sent to Senators stating that position. Did she disagree with the contents of the letter? If so, did she oppose sending it? If so, did she leave NAWL in protest?
I don't know, but I think Republican Senators need to find out before they vote on her confirmation. I'm having trouble getting my mind around the idea of an Associate Attorney General in a Republican administration who was okay with trying to derail an outstanding conservative jurist like Samuel Alito.
Yeah, what did Liu know and when did she know it? Lee's opposition to Liu's nomination made it unlikely she'd secure enough votes for confirmation. Lee didn't oppose the actual racists Trump has nominated, but he's upset that Liu was part of a radical group that believed women were people. It's not actually clear that Liu herself is pro-choice, but even if she is, that shouldn't be disqualifying even for a Republican appointee. Abortion is (still) legal. We're sure Barack Obama nominated men who belonged to groups that supported hunting. David French of the National Review recently suggested that if Democrats want to win the young, hip evangelical vote, they should "moderate" their stance on abortion rights. Supporting existing law is the "moderate" position. Rejecting Liu simply because she belonged to NAWL strikes us as the true "extremist" stance.
We also wonder what Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski think about this, as they are both supposedly members of Republicans for Choice. True, Collins voted to confirm Alito, just as she later voted to confirm Brett Kavanaugh, but she swears she's pro-choice and pro-women and all the rest of it. She gave a speech on the Senate floor on behalf of Judge Boof and due process. Can't she muster up one for Liu and freedom of association? There won't be as many cameras, but someone could record it on their iPhone.
Liu will still keep her job as US attorney for DC, so Argentina doesn't have to break out the Kleenex. She'd previously worked for the Bush Justice Department and served voluntarily on the Trump transition team. Before selecting Liu for the US attorney job in 2017, Trump met personally with her, which Dianne Feinstein criticized as an "uncommon" practice. That is Senate-speak for "shady as fuck." But maybe Liu is happy where she is, being the US Attorney overseeing prosecutions of Paul Manafort, Rick Gates, Maria Butina, an unknown mysterious foreign company owned by a foreign government ... you know, we say let the abortionist lady #DEEPSTATE mole stay where she is. Thanks Mike Lee, #Resistance hero!

"married women should be compelled by law to notify their husbands of their abortions."Tell ya what. I'll sign on to that, just as soon as you add a codicil stating that men must be compelled by law to notify their wives of any and all sexual escapades that could potentially lead either to unintended pregnancies OR potential exposure to STDs. Get back to me on that, mm-kay?
They're in the process right now.
