When the first Macintosh computer came out in 1984, the operating system was a bit iffy. One of the poor decisions, they chose the earliest date, represented as day index 000000, to be Jan 1, 1901. A poor choice, likely because the programmers average age was like 19.

That meant that anybody wanting to log birthdates would be unable for anyone over 84 years old, as their DOB was before Jan 1, 1901. That made the Mac less attractive for business usage, as many businesses need to keep track of birthdates. Insurance companies in particular just could not work well on that Mac OS.

With that technology though we couldn't have voters that are 850 years old.
