Actually most of them are just normal con-goers. I was active in the fandom for over a decade and I think I only knew a couple of people who ever even went suiting once.
Weird how you're so keen to defend trash people you admit you don't know, particularly considering you're 100% wrong...If people don't want to be perceived as trash, it's extremely easy to NOT deliberately seek out a Nazi dumpster to stage your garbage selfies in and then NOT upload those garbage pics to the internet.And you can climb down off that dramatic cross you just built, since nobody has even mentioned inciting harassment because we're not a bunch of chan-dwelling sociopaths who torment people for lulz.
Ok, thanks for providing context, but that's certainly not how I took, and not how the folks I know took it at the time. The show plots usually had the other characters doing the "oooo ick" responses, with Gil saying, knock it off with the assumptions, human behavior is broad.
I have no doubt they got a lot wrong, I'm just saying the Gil character was the tolerant sensible one.
Not disputing the Gil love. He was a minor role model for me for a time in my mixed up teenage years.
The portrayal was beyond problematic though, it was willfully ignorant for the sake of being exploitative. A lot of young people and professionals had to hide the community that let them feel safe and valued from the people in their lives because of it.
I’m glad that it did lead you to a better understanding though, against the odds. :)
I think curious people will always look beyond one source, balance it out with other perspectives. It's the folks who learn something once, and never question it who are a problem.
