The Republican-controlled Minnesota House of Representatives passed a nice fuck-the-poors bill Wednesday. The bill would cut the minimum wage for workers who make at least $4 an hour in tips, to Save Jobs, and also maybe because the state's restaurant industry lobbied heavily for the bill. To save jobs, dontcha know. Then they probably made a Hillary-at-Chipotle joke, which is all the rage with Republicans these days.
Back in the day there was a waitress minimum wage that was lower than the actual minimum wage, and so took into account, after a fashion, the tips. We all certainly under-reported our tip income to make it look like we were just clearing the actual minimum wage. Those were the days. I used to make my brother, who actually did work for minimum wage, help me count my cash. He was green with envy.I have noted lately that many restaurants have computer cash outs that calculate the tip for you at 15 or 20 percent. The downside of this for the waitresses is that now someone (the IRS? Your employer?) will have an actual record of what you really made, even in tips. Technology is not always your friend, it appears.
Definitely one of the more interesting new ALEC fads is this thing where state legislatures are passing laws telling towns and cities they cannot pass ordinances. For freedom.

If the Republican-controlled Minnesota House of Representatives really wants to Save Jobs, shouldn't they be cutting their own salaries and benefits? They voted for their own salaries to increase by 3% in 2015 and 3% in 2016, which doesn't seem like such a Job Saving move.

The greatest job I ever had was bartending at minimum wage. We took no credit cards and I declared no tips. $300.00/day free and clear.
