I was missing something here, because as a Californian I failed to understand why any grounds other than irreconcilable differences would be required for a divorce, CA has no other grounds for divorce, so if MS has that then what's the problem?

In order to obtain a no-fault divorce, both spouses must agree to divorce on the basis of irreconcilable differences. If one of the spouses does not agree, the spouse seeking the divorce must prove that the other spouse committed one of the “fault” grounds listed above.
And, of course, the whole issue with domestic violence would be that one party is trying to escape it...
