FWIW, I'd suggest just nuking inappropriate comments (ideally with an explanatory email). Vowel-removal seems either playful (are we really serious abut this?), or aimed to call attention to the (non-existent) commenter for shaming. With regard to the latter point, I admit to a life-long bias toward "public praise, private ass-kicking", which may not translate well to the wonderful world of interconnected anonymity.
