Tuesday saw a bizarre little pas de deux in Missouri, as St. Louis County Attorney Robert McCulloch said that he'd continue on as lead prosecutor in the shooting of Michael Brown by Officer Darren Wilson. And Gov. Jay Nixon insisted that he would not replace McCulloch.
Re the voter registration booths popping up in Ferguson: “Injecting race into this conversation and into this tragedy, not only is not helpful, but it doesn’t help a continued conversation of justice and peace.” --Missouri RNC executive director Matt Wills
Yes, there's nothing like voter registration booths to "inject race" into the situation. You wouldn't want those blah people to resort to anything as "unhelpful" as voting, when rioting is so much more convenient and productive.
Recusal is a thing judges do, this is a prosecutor. The thing DAs do is requesting a special prosecutor, which seems to be much rarer. Even with judges, having relatives, even multiple relatives, in the same profession as a party to a case simply is not basis for recusal.
I agree McCulloch should step aside, but mostly because this case calls for far greater rigor in minimizing doubts of any kind about the impartiality of those tasked with achieving justice than is routinely needed. Even without considering the merits, it's clear that he is not part of the minimum-doubt approach.
Interesting that Masters of Sex has had a storyline this season about race relations in St Louis back in the 50's. Doesn't seem like much has changed...
While the objection to the displacement from command of a bunch of goons whose many manifest failures were on full display for the entire nation was a major red flag, I can't say with absolute certainty that McCulloch is biased.
The situation seems to call for someone the people can give a much more ringing endorsement than that, though, no?
McCulloch recently ran a political ad, ostensibly attacking one of the candidates for County Executive, but spent about half the time talking about himself. I assume therefore, that he is planning on running for higher office. Unless he thinks that recusal will gain more votes than continuing with the issue, he'll press on.
His pollsters are hard at work as we speak.

Fuck, I'm old. I had to read this far to get the ABM treaty out of my mind. No wonder millennials don't pay attention to me.
Condemned? Probably not. But this kind of thing is why there is recusal, for honorable people.

So, he must be condemned for who he pals around with?

I just hope that nice Don West is available for the defense.

Holder and that African American attorney should both be barred from participating. How can they possibly be fair? They're both black.
pas de deuxchie on de lefthand side.
Much as I love a good game of hot potato, fellas, this is not the time for it.
If the cop has to sell his house to pay her fees, she can arrange it!
Also dental work.

...specific issues of the legal...
It's uncanny how formerly-GILFy that sounds.
"U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is scheduled to arrive in Missouri today. Surely no one will mind if he cuts in to the dance?"
Um. Eric Holder does not look like a man who can dance. Or who wants to.
