An interesting piece over at Politico, on one former president:

Bush’s presidency ended in tears, but his years as an ex-president have been an underappreciated object lesson. It’s an example for fellow chief executives and plenty of other big shots (and, for that matter, medium shots and small shots) in a capital where no one ever seems to stop tending to their brand: You really can just go away.

Maybe Bush’s absence was hastened because he was politically toxic and disowned by his party. Plenty of other pols, though, would have used that as motivation to scrape even harder to get back in our good graces. Yet even people with that earthly motivation might find inspiration in Bush’s example. Sometimes, the best way to win America back is to pipe down and paint.

There was a video discussion at The Bulwark this morning [eta: The Focus Group Podcast] where they discussed the Trump-to-Biden voters and played clips from interviews where they explained why they won't be voting for Biden again. Disheartening but interesting. One of the big issues is Biden's age and how he falls a lot and can't answer questions and has 'checked out'. One guy said, and I paraphrase, "at least Reagan was competent when he was president."

President Biden doesn't fall down a lot, does answer questions, and far from checking out, he is on the ball. As for trump, he's not that much younger than the President, and clearly in decline. Besides, there is a good chance that he will be in prison by the 2024 election. Most of all, he can't accept the results of an election that he doesn't like, and spurred an insurrection. HTF can anyone vote for that traitor? Even if you believe all of the crap that the fucking media spews about President Biden, why would you vote for a fucking traitor???

Sorry for the rant, but as I typed, the angrier I got - at the media and at stupid voters.

I just wonder which idiot/asshole is going to step up and be "the third way." After 2016, you'd think people would remember how bad it was for us all that those horrible excuses for humanity were in charge of everything. Not to mention the "2025 Plan." We need to read it and get it to "low information voters." Anyone drawing attention to it in the MSM?

Expand full comment
clairence's avatar

I agree. But you can't deny the visible differences in energy between Trump and Biden. Trump's crazy, but he's also high-energy. And that's one way he won in 2016, remember the whole "low-energy Jeb" thing that he turned on Hillary? If you say it loud enough and often enough, apparently people will just believe you.

Expand full comment
Fender Deluxe's avatar

I want someone to explain to me why kinetic energy as displayed by a lunatic like Donald Trump is better than potential energy as embodied by a steady hand like Joe Biden.

I also wonder about the chemicals that contribute to Trump's energy.

Expand full comment
Linda1961 is woke and proud's avatar

But he can't walk down a ramp on his own. He rides in golf carts everywhere, when others walk. trump's "high energy" is due to his craziness and possibly prescriptions, and isn't from good health. President Biden is low energy because he is calm, which is what we need, and he is clearly in good health. Too many people are superficial.

When I was in high school, there was a local state representative (or state senator--I forget) who would come in for "press conferences" twice a year for the kids taking journalism, and I think was really cool. We had to do research and prep questions, and then he'd come in for an hour, and we all had to write an article.

Eileen's avatar

That sounds wonderful!

Expand full comment
Babe Paley's avatar

It was cool--and we'd all write out questions after researching what he did and news of the day, and get feedback on them from the teacher, and the representative would get into it, and sometimes be combative (a little) and throw out really quotable stuff to get you to latch onto it, and then he invited us to visit him at the capitol.
