Dok, on the straining credulity issue, how many people would have known before this present kerfuffle, how many of the Nazi symbology experts floating around the internet would have known what a Totenkopf was? How many people would have known of its origin as a German military symbol used by the Totenkopfhusaren, a Prussian cavalry unit established by Friedrich the Great in 1741? https://laststandonzombieisland.com/tag/totenkopfhusaren/ How many would know of the myriad ways it has been used as a military symbol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Totenkopf , including by the USMC Marine Division Recon? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marine_Corps_Reconnaissance_Battalions

I don't find that it strains credulity at all. The reason it feels that way is that the focus has been exclusively on its use by the SS, so that, in our minds, there is a binary choice between meaningless or SS uniforms, so it seems obvious that he would know. When you include all of the potential meanings, there are a lot that he could have stumbled on, most notably the Marine Division Recon symbol, given that he was an active duty marine.

Nancy Mace is a garbage human seeking validation that she's not one of the worst humans in history. She pays staff to post cut-out comments across a rainbow (not that kind of rainbow, as if she would!) of the lowest of the lows on social media, and makes sure her staff wash her clothes and clean her home.

Complete bottom of the barrel gutter trash. 🤮

I think there is a chance Nancy received more than several write in candidates.

"Let’s just be honest and say that a dirtbag is far better than a fascist, and let’s not pretend that Platner is going through any kind of redemption arc."

Thanks Dok, this is where I'm at. We all know that Collins has to go and that the damage she's caused - with her SCOTUS votes alone - is far more comprehensive than Platner's record. But that does 𝑛𝑜𝑡 mean we should stick our heads in the sand about who this guy is, and I'm frankly sick and tired of hearing people defend him, downplay his behavior, or act as if his personal conduct doesn't matter. It does matter, it's an indication of who someone really is, and the private and public 𝑎𝑙𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠 bleed into one another. And we don't get to point it out when it's personal Republican conduct and then ignore it when it's on our own side. We should expect better of people we choose to represent us.

Platner has handed Collins as much ammunition against him than she could possibly hope for, and she shouldn't be underestimated. This is going to be a bloodbath.

rick prose's avatar

Mainer here. I went into the voting booth on Tuesday knowing I was going to vote for Platner, but, "holding my nose," as my buddy Jeff put it.

I have voted for Desperately Concerned Susan in the past, not gonna lie. But, only because the state Dems couldn't wrangle up a candidate who stood a chance in hell of getting elected.

Last time round I supported Sara Gideon all the way and she should have won - smart young woman with a proven track record in state politics, nearly the exact opposite of whatever husk of a human being Collins has become over the years. My fellow Mainers, though, they hate change, the older ones who actually go out and vote. For decades I've been telling people that the state motto should not be "Dirigo," but, "Why Would You Want To Do That?"

Everything that's come out about Platner leads me to believe that the RNC will spend 18 gazillion dollars making him look like the worst fucking person to ever walk the earth, and Mainers will re-elect Collins for the SIXTH FUCKING TIME!

As a first-time candidate Collins promised she would never seek to serve more than two terms.

But, you know, it's nice work if you can get it, and you can get it if you try...

coco lurks from home's avatar

Gideon is why I keep warning people not to get too happy. She was polling ahead of Collins for nearly the entire campaign. People from all over the country were sending her money, including me, because she was looking so good.

And then Collins handed her ass to her by almost 9 points.

rick prose's avatar

The DNC was pouring everything into getting Biden elected, state Dems needed money they never got. National politics is a depressing beat to follow.

Werewolf's avatar

I am glad I don’t live in Maine, is all I’m saying.

coco lurks from home's avatar

Yeah. I'm just heartsick by this one. Like, seriously, this is what you people dredged up because it's what you thought you needed to get rid of Collins? It is just really fucking depressing. I've had to vote before for candidates I wasn't particularly thrilled with, but never anything like this.

"Platner is the Trump of the left if there was one."

I mean really. Holy hyperbole. It's dramatic. Whatever neurons are rapid firing or whatever hormones are being released, that's a dramatic take. Propaganda works, on all sides.

BlueStateLibel's avatar

Wow, way to get behind our candidates. One thing Republicans do is get behind their candidates no matter what. When you express suck lukewarm support, the Independents who often decide elections damn well notice and vote accordingly. But let's keep talking about sexting and tattoos, that will work, you're doing their work for them.

coco lurks from home's avatar

It's adorable how you think it's going to matter what we say or that Maine voters will give a shit. I assure you it won't matter one bit when the candidate himself has been so very helpful with providing material for Collins. He sucks because he sucks, not because any of us have said so.

BlueStateLibel's avatar

Adorable or not, at least Republicans aren't dumb enough to savage their own candidates. I guess it's six more years of a GOP Senate, sigh.

coco lurks from home's avatar

You seem to be under the impression that Platner didn’t hand his own ass over to the Collins oppo team, or that no one would even know about it if we weren’t talking about it. He did this to himself, and it was selfish. He knew he had this history when he decided to go after this seat. She is going to absolutely blast him with this shit regardless of what anyone here says, and if he loses, he has no one else to blame. I don’t get a vote, but I sincerely hope he can pull it off. I also hope we don’t make a habit of pretending asshole aren’t assholes.

hillary's left one's avatar

i promise not to pretend you’re not acting like one, how’s that?

coco lurks from home's avatar

I don't give a shit what you want to pretend. You go ahead and pretend all you like.

BlueStateLibel's avatar

Nope, I never said anything like that, but you believe what you want.

coco lurks from home's avatar

You very specifically said that we're "savaging" our own candidate and drew a line from that to resigning ourselves to a GOP Senate. Pointing out facts and stating that the man is an asshole is not "savaging" him. It is coming to terms with reality, and we'd all better get used to it, because this race is going to be brutal.

hillary's left one's avatar

actually we’re going to win it, for all the reasons Graham Platner ISN’T Sara Gideon, who was my single biggest out-of-state contributee (I’m in Colorado) that year. I loved her and I gave her, for me and for an out-of-state race, a LOT of money.

You seem to be upset Platner isnt in the Gideon mold, but that didn’t work. Let’s see how a Democratic Socialist plays out in what is shaping up to be a Throw The Bums Out year. Or at least let’s not castigate our felliw with dire predictions about how brutal we think it’s gonna be, and how obtuse they are for not seeing it as a FACT before the fucking race has started.

Werewolf's avatar

Yeah, so what if he had a Nazi tattoo-for EIGHTEEN YEARS. And expressed approval of war crimes. And physically abused women. And said that it’s a woman’s responsibility to keep from being raped. Picky, picky.

BlueStateLibel's avatar

Hardly anyone would have known that was a Nazi tattoo, it was a skull and crossbones, not a swatiska. As for physically abusing women, only one woman alleged that, and she is a Republican operative. He's also expressed remorse for some of the statements he made.

But let's elect Susan Collins again, I'm sure she'll be better and more concerned this time while Republicans continue to destroy the country.

rick prose's avatar

Anyone who's ever seen a WWII movie with Nazis in it would know it's an SS symbol. He got it in Croatia, which was Nazi-aligned during the war, so maybe he and his drunk Marine buddies rolled into a tattoo parlor that only had Nazi designs and he picked the one he thought was coolest. I've been drunk, could have happened.

But, if it was me, I'd have sobered up the next day, looked at the thing and said, "Shit, I gotta get that fucking thing taken care of, that was a mistake!"

Werewolf's avatar

“Skulls, Hans! Skulls!”

The Totenkopf is a very well-known Nazi symbol. And Platner absolutely knew what it was-and didn’t get it covered up until very recently. I don’t want Collins in the Senate either, but the attack ads write themselves.

‘Gnats will swarm’: Weather forecast perfect for bugs to take over Trump’s UFC fight

The number of gnats in my man-cave has dropped like ... flies. Could be the temps hit the 90s. Could be my spiders living off the fat of the land. Could be because I don't light up the place like a Congressional Watergate hearing where they brought in Klieg lights. Which is how Donnie's going to light up the biggest box-office flop since the reboot of Ishtar.

This is why it’s good to keep a spider in the corner of your window. They do amazing work. My cleaning lady moved mine out (gently took it outside) and I miss her.

Also if you’ve ever done outdoor musical theatre you KNOW about bugs flying in your mouth. FTR fruit flies taste nothing like fruit. Ask me how I know.

Platner won the primary by over 50 points. The DSCC needs to get off their ass and get behind him - no more of this "he's problematic" bullshit. I get that he's not the perfect candidate, but he's the one Maine chose by a landslide; get with the program.

coco lurks from home's avatar

Not sure why you think they aren't behind him:

https://www.dscc.org/article/dscc-statement-on-maine-senate-race/

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chair Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand released the following statement at the start of the general election in Maine:

“Over the past year, we have created a path to win a Democratic Senate majority and put a stop to the chaos and damage of the Trump administration by defeating the Republicans who enable his harmful agenda. Susan Collins has never been more vulnerable after she voted with Trump 96 percent of the time, confirmed his far-right judicial nominees, and took millions from special interests while voting to rip health care away from Mainers. In November, Maine voters will elect Graham Platner, and we will win a Senate majority.”
