The Kola project was under political pressure to go deeper than the US Mohole. Both projects found that the pressure from the rock on all sides really really wanting to close up the gap becomes exceedingly strong. From the Kola hole eerie shrieking sounds were heard, prompting a Soviet scientist to joke that it was the cries of the damned in hell.Naturally this was reported in American tabloids as "Scientists prove that hell is real" with emphasis that these were Communist atheist scientists who were forced to admit that the Bible was right after all. This factoid continued to circulate in Christian apologetics for years.

Yeah, bet if you walk around town with a sheathed saber you are a whole lot more likely to be arrested than if you carry an AR-15.
