I think it's this, and that, generally, going to college gets you out of whatever bubble you may have grown up in and you meet, make friends with, and date people from all different backgrounds and life experiences. Harder to think all Mexican people are scary illegal immigrants if they are your friends, classmates, etc. Same reason I think that cities tend to be more liberal — a whole lot of different people from a whole lot of different places living together in (mostly) harmony. The racist, xenophobic bullshit is a lot less appealing when you actually know people who are different from you.
