The Germans established the gas chambers for any number of reasons, the chief of which was economy of scale. Before the in-ground chambers they already had moved on to gassing trucks. But there was a significant psychological reason to quit shooting people in the back of the head. The soldiers doing the shooting soon perceived that the back of a person's head is as individual and personal as the front, and they became increasingly freaked out by the experience.
