And this is why my child is in a chain day care center. Are there better ones being run privately? Sure. But do I know that my center has to live in fear of their corporate overlords as well as the state, and that the corporate overlords have to make REALLY SURE their profit centers are not going to get shut down? Bigger sure.

Also I get a discount from my employer, so that's nice.

All that red tape & those regulations were *created* to stop people like Robinson & his wife & their shitty, unsafe daycare. Of course this is all from the "protect the children from drag queens reading books to them" crowd.

OK, but is he going to get elected? What's the polling, etc.?

Stein has the slightest of edges in recent polling, within margin of error, basically a tossup.

One thing is for certain. The GQP campaign can’t deny police reports, health inspection reports, and the like. They also cannot deny ‘first-hand’ reports/interviews from the families of the children who were in their care.

They can disappear those reports. They can buy off inspectors. They can literally set fire to records and burn buildings down.

You're going to need to expand your imagination if you're going to keep up in this cycle.

I will agree to you on one thing. There’s a lot that’s the fault of ‘white people’. That’s why, for the 27+ years this white man worked in law enforcement and firefighting, I fought to change that outlook.

I might not be able to stop all the racism, racial slurs, and the like. But you understand. I’m a whole lot different than your ‘average’ white man.

My father and mother worked the farm when I was small, and growing up. They left the house before daylight and didn’t get home until after dark most days. I was raised by a black woman, and I’m damn proud to say that. When I was old enough to work on the farm, the friends I had were white, black, Mexican, Cuban. Kids if all races, colors, and different religions. We all got along just fine. If we didn’t, my dad tore our asses up with his 25’ bullwhip. He as respected by all who worked for him. He showed no favoritism, and he raised us the same way.

So, do me a favor. Save your snide comments for someone else. You come back at me with another one, you will not like my reply to you. That I can promise you.

Evangelicals ARE “actual christians”. They're more in line with historical Christianity than progressive Christians are, for that matter.

The problem isn't American Christianity or public Christianity, the problem is Christianity itself. Its an authoritarian death cult and always has been.

Dude, there is one book. Read it.

It does not actually say, "Fuck your neighbor, abortion is bad, and eat lots of pork BBQ"

I was a practicing Christian for most of my life and I almost went to seminary. I'm intimately familiar with the Bible.

If you think the evangelicals who DO think the Bible tells them to do all of that make your religion look bad, go yell at them.

Also read an actual history book some time and look at what Christians have been doing in the name of Christ for the past two-ish millennia.

Talk to me when atheism drives a civil rights movement or ends slavery.

Anyway, you believe what you want.

Claiming religion does not justify evil and the atheist movement if as much of bunch of woman-hating fuckwits as any orthodox gathering. Not being religion similarly justifies nothing.

The confederacy was explicitly Christian. And the Confederate army was just as Christian as the union army. Christianity doesn't get special credit for ending slavery for the same reason an adult who shits on the living room floor doesn't get special credit for cleaning it up.

Also, these took about thirty seconds of googling to find:

At no point have I ever said that movement atheism is perfect. There's a reason I won't have anything to do with it. So nice try, but no.

Christianity has always been a heavily political religion that's been inclined to authoritarianism and violence. Crack open an actual history book and maybe learn about the people Christians have been victimizing in the name of their God before you try and claim Christians can't be evil.

I would contend that the "Prosperity Gospel" is actually a heresy--attitudes like that would have gotten them stoned in the early Church (pre-Constantine).

Expand full comment

No. The only reason Christianity was in a position for Constantine to make that move was because Christians spent a long ass time cuddling up to the empire by vice signaling. The gospels are literally just post hoc antisemitic propaganda written by Roman Christians to show that they hated the Jews just like Big Daddy Rome did.

Expand full comment

While the white Church and the black church are two very different things, the core problem is Christianity itself. Christian theology is toxic. There's no getting around that. Authoritarianism and sadism are just as integral to its DNA as Jesus is.

Refusing to acknowledge that is a massive part of why we've gotten to this sorry state.

Or are you just offering / repeating your opinion again without either support or nuance?

I'm intimately familiar with Christian theology and history. Have you ever cracked open a bible and actually read it instead of letting a pastor give you your opinion? Or read an actual history book?

Expand full comment

I stopped going to church after reading the Bible, but the takeaway I got was after reading just the "red letter" (red letter Bibles had all of Jesus' words in red) sections I realized that the Christian church had strayed far from the message of Jesus.

People are generally OK as long as they don't have power, and lots of them are actually good. Unfortunately those who desire power will do their worst to accumulate it, and the Church gave them the ultimate weapon to control the populace, namely their fear of death. The Christian Church is just another power structure dedicated to its own elevation through whatever means it can, but individuals who live according to the example of Jesus are the true Christians.

If you take the whole Jesus saga & being "Christ-like" parts out, you aren't wrong.

He *is* wrong.

Authoritarianism and sadism are just as integral to some Islamic radicals and atheist racists, but he doesn't want to focus on the genocidal racism inherent in White Christian nationalism because he doesn't want to look at the dominance power dynamic.

It's real easy to see once you look at the repetition in the rhetoric without any support or additional research.

Or, you know, knowledge of psychology or American history.

You can't look at this stuff in a vacuum.

I mean, you *can*, but you don't end up looking or sounding credible in 2024 when we've had all this time to read about the history of this country and do better

I don't really look at anything "in a vacuum" - it's a complex issue with vast layers and history, sociology, psychology, etc. all play part. That said, Christianity is supposed to be, per most of the Jesus parables, centered on and based upon love. But it isn't. It is a religion based in fear that uses fear to control and keep the flock. Blame it on the early Church, but the fact remains. Religion is created by humans, who are but flawed beings. None of them ever have or ever will get it right.

If you actually knew anything about Christian history you'd know you sound like an idiot.

The crusades, the inquisition, pogroms, and the residential schools in the US and Canada were all explicitly Christian endeavors undertaken in the name of God. And that's just the short list of the top of my head.

Insisting that "Real Christianity" can do no wrong is an insult to Christianity's victims.

Edited to add: https://religiondispatches.org/stop-trying-to-save-jesus-fandamentalism-reinforces-the-problem-of-christian-supremacism/

https://sojo.net/articles/myth-christian-innocence-reinforces-anti-semitism

Also, my whole point is that automatically equating Christianity with good like you're doing is part of a dominance power dynamic. Christianity has been the de facto sole religion in this country and most of Europe, as well as being exported via colonialism that it's had a chance to whitewash its history and do a hell of a lot of spin doctoring JUST LIKE RED STATES TRYING TO WHITEWASH AMERICAN HISTORY.

Happy are those who dash the infants upon the rocks. Psalm 137:9

Even aside from all that, Christianity is what Christians DO with it. And Christian history can be generally described as “speed running the Geneva convention.”

Slavery was A OK with the church for centuries, because it helped spread the gospel. Hell, the largest protestant denomination in the world, the Southern Baptist convention, is called the southern Baptist convention because southern Baptist split with northern Baptist over the whole “is it okay to own slaves, actually” thing and they're still proudly calling themselves the southern Baptists.

Plus, the only reason abortion became a big deal here was because the fight against desegregation became a losing battle. Protestant opposition to abortion is literally younger than the happy meal. It was originally just a Catholic thing, but when it became clear that screaming about desegregation wasn't going to be a winning tactic anymore, they switched to abortion as their rallying cry instead.

Marcy Wheeler makes an excellent point about the hacked Trump campaign documents, and the Washington Post missing a huge point

HOLY HELL YOU FUCKING MORONS!!!

Trump used Brand Woodward--an absolutely crucial team on Trump's criminal defense--to do their VP vetting.

If they got OTHER docs from Woodward, Trump could be wildly exposed--& it would explain why Trump didn't tell FBI

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/08/10/trump-hack-iran-vance-report/

Remember: Among others, Stan Woodward represents Walt Nauta, who may know WHAT classified docs Trump stole and where the ones that disappeared went to.

Now imagine if Iran found docs disclosing that?

tan Woodward was cleared into ALL of the documents charged against Trump.

That includes the Iranian attack doc Trump showed to Mark Meadows' briefers. It likely includes numerous docs on Iran's nuke program.
