Every tragedy suffered at the hands of Obama or Biden is imagined, just as every overblown threat to “destroy America” is. On the other hand, all of the real harm and corruption happening in real time by Trump is invisible. They can’t or won’t see it or acknowledge it. Over the entire period of Douthat's tenure, US-American social democracy has been stabbed as many times as Julius Caesar's torso. But just as the demise of the first Caesar was by no means "peak imperialism" for Rome, our current age of faltering democracy and festering fascism in the United States is absolutely not the age of "peak woke."

Douthat and David Brooks were the absolute biggest fucking cheerleaders for the Tea Party, for pushing Gore into submission RE Bush vs. Gore as a matter of "civility" even as crates of ballots were being found, and so on.
