Years ago there was a panic because people who were introduced to SSRIs and SSNRIs seemed to commit suicide more frequently than those who were just left to suffer. This was possibly because these meds allowed people to act on suicidal ideation rather than to remain in the state of walking corpse to which severe depression tends to reduce the sufferer.

A name like "Lithium lover" could refer to many things - among them would be using lithium to reduce episodes of mania and psychosis, but as you feel like shit on lithium that's unlikely. Another use is for people who use mobile devices to stay on-line and have high capacity lithium batteries.

Wouldn't gun owners freak out to know that we're aware of this? "How the hell do they know how many guns I own? The government really IS spying on me!"

Really we're able to tell by the level of anger suspected gun owners show when asked if they own guns and how many. More butthurt = more guns.

"I blame Bush II for lowering the clean water standards and allowing more heavy metals into the US drinking water."Ah, yes, heavy metals. And we are what? only 15-20 years out from finally deciding that getting the lead out of the air/soil was more important than having muscle cars? Gonna take another generation minimum until lead poisoning from gasoline and all the associated mental health problems is no longer a thing in this country.

Big Pharma wants treatments for SYMPTOMS. Actual cures are just going to cut into profit margins.

i have a friend who (on paxil) tried to pull a Kurt Cobain when he was 16, didn't succeed (only got half his jaw) immediately tried again, and got the rest of that side of his face and part of his brain. he eats mushrooms and smokes the chronic now, voila no more problems - so the point is this - more mushrooms, and pot - less guns - or be a better shot - (he laughs with me on that one when we shroom)

There's big caveats around this, because correlation does not prove causation, but...

When a country bans lead in fuel, 15 to 20 years later crime falls, often the biggest drop that country has ever seen. This is a on going debate, as its difficult to test-"can you put lead back in your petrol for a decade, just to see..." But the graphs are consisting

Damn EPA and their anti business agenda.

I mean, it's not like these psychiatric medications were all put through lengthy clinical trials prior to being approved by the FDA, or that most of them have been in use for decades now and have been taken by tens of millions of people. We just don't know what effects they might have, do we?

You didn't see the data that Eli Lilly hid trials from the FDA that showed Prozac caused healthy test subjects to suddenly become homicidal?

Did you know that Luvox, the drug one of the Columbine killers was on (as well as Bryn Hartman) is illegal to give to people under the age of 18 in the UK because it is known to cause suicidal and homicidal ideation in even healthy test subjects?

Without genetic testing on every patient BEFORE prescribing these meds, they are dangerous. Some small percentage of people will become homicidal. That much is actually known.

Besides the incompatibility with certain (common) genetic mutations, they also cause a long-term deficiency of seratonin. It's much safer, in the case of a seratonin deficiency, to address the cause of that. (Rather than inhibiting the reuptake, actually getting more seratonin produced, which the SSRIs do NOT do, but which can be done.)

Actually, it's found now that treating the microbiome of the gut in many, many cases, will resolve depression. We're not looking at causes with these SSRIs. We're looking at symptoms, and they aren't doing a great job in even handling just those.

However, studies have shows that these drugs cause some healthy test subjects to become suicidal and homicidal. It's a genetic thing - some people simply should not have them. Genetic testing needs to be done on everyone before being prescribed these kinds of drugs.

I'm no fan of Fiore - I think she should be locked up for threatening to commit hate crimes. But don't imagine for a moment that George's Bush's friends at Eli Lilly are on the good side here. (Yeah, his dad was on the board of directors for the company that makes Prozac, and they were both investors. Not only that, but they put the head of Eli Lilly on the Homeland Security council.)

From Mayo Clinic's website: "The P450 enzyme with the most variation in different people is the CYP2D6, which processes many antidepressants and antipsychotic medications. By checking your DNA for certain gene variations, CYP450 tests can offer clues about how your body may respond to a particular antidepressant. Other CYP450 tests are available for other enzymes."

I really believe, considering the risks of these drugs, there should be a requirement - a legal requirement - that every patient get genetic testing and evaluation before being prescribed them.
