1. You missed the US "covertly" supplies arms to the Mujahadeen, and helps them switch to growing poppies, to get more money for more arms.2. Who was it who said not to get into a land war in Asia?

1) I don't know. Straus left open running for higher office (PATRICK), but he also too said it was "highly unlikely".

2) I think "earthquake" is adequate. https://www.texastribune.or...

3) Zerwas, the House Appropriations chair has tossed his hat in the ring. Phil King is the main just this side of the Freedumbs conservative. there will be a Freedumbie. there are a few more names floating around. one of the ways the TX lege gets it right is having the speaker's race be a simple majority in the House--no party leadership games. so we can still get a moderate in there if there is one willing to do so and the moderates aren't afraid to side with us on it. thing is, even if they say they are thinking about a run, they can't file paperwork. so we won't know for a bit.

4) at the end of their terms in January 2019. remember that we only have a 140 day regular session every 2 years with the option of special sessions. we might have a special session later on once we know how much we'll need in a supplemental appropriation for Harvey. we're still waiting on a lot of insurance companies. TX, FL, PR and CA are all waiting on Ben Carson for the CDBG-DR grants. (though he did approve use of the grants we had left over from the 2 Bastrop fires, the 2015 and 2016 floods in Houston, Ike and Dolly for use in the counties affected by Harvey which were under those previous declarations.)

5) it's the start of campaign filing. it allows lead time for replacements to raise money and file by 12/11. but it also lets the business community know that they were dead serious about them needed to put their moneys where their mouths were. maybe they'll fund a higher office run. MAYBE. Straus does have $10 million in his account. it also fucks with Dan Patrick a little bit because he was setting up Straus to be his devil for a bunch of races Mucus is backing. he's just lost that. he'll have to make a real argument now without a foil.

Me? Not so much.

The longer and uglier this Republican clown show gets, I feel like I'm less and less willing to settle for anything below the very bestest comeuppance these grifters can possibly get. And my standards are rising every day!

How can we possibly recover the huge financial and social damages we'll all be suffering, thanks to the GOP's fuckery? How about a huge, highly progressive tax INcrease, to take the penalty out of all the rich, amoral GOP grifters. [All] we need is a yuuuge political groundswell, and then the social equilibrium to take them on with votes and taxes, rather than the guillotine.

Like I said, I'm developing very high standards.

As far as the GOP cares, they can change their minds all they want as long as they don't change the way they vote.
