I just had my sister ragging on me Memorial Day weekend about the use of "African American" vs "Black." She insists she has a colleague who maintains that "Black" is the only word to use for descendants of slaves in the USA, and that "African American" needs to be used for people who emigrated here from Africa.
For what its worth I remember when John Kerry's wife, Teresa Heinz, claimed she was African American because she was born in the east African colony of Portuguese Mozambique. At least our young mayoral candidate is brown toned. I also remember the daughter of a friend of mine who was technically African-American, but was blonde haired and blue eyed thanks to her German mom. Life is fluid and rather messy

I’m so disgusted by the Mamdani story that I just canceled my weekly subscription to the Sunday Times (of 50 years duration!) and signed on to a paid subscription to Wonkette. Going to miss the Book Review but I couldn’t live with myself continuing to give money to collaborationists.
I canceled my subscription when the NYT unfairly trashed Joe Biden's withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan. Since then they've changed hands and are even worse now.

My parents subscribed to the Times for a long time. In the 90's when it pissed them off over something, they canceled their subscription and would go to the public library to read the book review. The library was not going to cancel its subscription, but the Times saw no money from my parents continuing to reading it. Kind of like stealing from the Times but legal
