100 years ago, white settlement of my area was literally a government scheme to "populate" the vast swathes of "empty" (not used by white people) land.

The original scheme was an abject failure and was heavily restructured after 20 years. "Original" settlers held enormous resentment towards"blow-ins", ie the families coming in under the revised scheme. The Originals had endured appalling hardships to develop their farms. They'd seen neighbours who were also comrades and family, pushed aside and broken by a system that set them up to fail. And now these leeches thought were just going to swan in on much easier terms, and take the rewards that rightfully belonged to their loved ones? Oh HELL no.

Of course their resentment *should* have been towards the idiot bureaucracts who planned badly and executed worse, then abandoned the victims of their incompetence; rather than other families just looking for a better life. But unfortunately human nature doesn't work like that.

And the racial element would make things even nastier. What a nightmare.

I was comparing them in the vein of the original poster...as failures of civic planning. I lived in Tennessee for years and agree that Memphis has better entertainment choices but both sprawl endlessly and pointlessly.

Sorry. I am in Kansas, and we don't need to deposit all of them Wyoming. There are far western Kansas/eastern Colorado high plains that might be suitable. I grew up in the remotest SW Kansas place and I understand your Nooo, we don't need any more dumb shit nasty white folk bigots. But my understanding is that Wyoming's population is quite a bit less than 1 million, and you have two Senators, like all the rest of the states. So you can help a bit, please? Thanks.

Fort Bend is fairly low-poverty for its size, and has the largest Asian (many south) population percentage of any TX county. Not clear if S. Asians vote MAGA, but from what I have read they trend Blue~ish

So too bad they felt too powerless to ever think of zoning. Or saying no to developers and all that. It's too bad. Do people ever talk about missing the open land? I know that's just a funny idea to some people who're glad some money came into the area.

Of course there are millions of the shriveled rich who'd harass the wrong kind of children to keep away from their front door at Halloween-- I've seen this in front of a huge Tara sort of house in NJ where I used to live-- so shocking. Screaming little children running down this wide lawn to the road. But it could be any sort of house really. They've got poverty in their brain cells forever. Most people could not act that way face to face with a child I don't think. Anyway poverty's hideous-- I'll shut up.

Every employee of every doctor's office and drug store is a young mexican or S.E. Asian and so sweet and personable. I wonder how California would function without them. The other day my son and I encountered a super-cranky middle-aged person behind a pharmacy counter who treated us as a giant nuisance. She had to be forced to take each step and disappeared in the back at intervals. The appearance of her knitted suit from 1956 and the faint feeling we both had of being convicted felons by the time we left really took me back to olden days when retail clerks were so often like this woman. I was always told it was because the job was badly paid. I'm sure it's badly paid now too, but customers don't get punished for it like we used to-- at least not around here.

I wonder how these people who claim to love their country so much can support, or at least have no problem with, an insurrection.

I heard on the radio earlier today that it was Montgomery Co., MD- which is a thing, also.
