When I was growing up drag shows were produced in dingy back rooms, homosexuality was illegal (see: Stonewall Riots, which occurred a year after I graduated from college), and trans people were scared shitless to come out of the closet like everyone else in the LGBTQ+ community. In many locales either of the last two could lead to lynching.
