Because he liked it and thought it was a dandy-keen idea...bet he spent a lot of time cheering Tail-Gunner Joe on.

I was a grown-ass adult, and Newtie was one of the first people I distinctly remember wanting to punch through the TV set.

That's not the one the members of the Talibundy carry around - I think Jesus helped evangelical Tom Jefferson write that one.

I remember one of my teachers saying that a society is only as just and as moral as the way in which it treats its most despised members...and that the most important civil rights in the country are those of the members of the most despised groups, because if you can violate the civil rights of the universally despised, then all any of the rest of us have are civil privileges.

"Do, say, the French worry about un-French activities?"

Yes, sadly. Google "hijab ban". French fascists want COMPULSORY pork in school lunches because VIVE LA FRANCE, fuck the Mooslims (and the Jews).

Sadly, this is not the most anti-semetic thing I've heard about modern-day France, by far.

Honestly, everywhere in the world, new Islamophobia is just old anti-Semitism in drag. After anti-Semitism became unfashionable after cousin Adolf took it too dang far (and in France the whole question of local fascists and conservatives enthusiastically jumping on the Holocaust train is still a touchy subject), the impulses to "persecute the scary minority" were just switched to the Muslims, with a kind of perverse "Christian Zionism" covering up for it - suddenly Jews were great, but only if they were in the Middle East shooting Arabs.

Fun history fact: HUAC never went after American fascism. It focused on communists from its inception in 1938, and rejected a suggestion that they investigate the Klan. Nothing like objective fact-finding...
