It's been one brain-basher of a week, and it's only Tuesday. So take a minute to watch this terrific little "Best New Thing in the World" clip about how ceremonial first pitches usually suck -- there's even a Washington Post chart to prove it: Of course, all you need to show up those dumb celebrities and politicians is a 13-year-old
Woulda been nice if Rachel didn't refer to her as the "girl" pitcher ... just saying. What an awesome story and Mo'ne is so FAB!
Agreed @ 13 she's a girl, but she's a pitcher and a damn good one! Like when it needs to be explained that someone is a "female" doctor or "male" nurse. It's the 21st century, can we stick to the job description? Go Team Mo'ne!
So long as she's not a feminist.
In that chart the only pitches that hit the strike zone were thrown by two Presidents (Clinton and G. W. Bush), one Supreme Court Justice (Sotomayor), two celebrities (McConaughey and Snoop Dogg) and one, one athlete (Randy Johnson). Greg Maddux's pitch missed the inside corner and Stone Cold Steve Austin's was just a bit too high (but otherwise a pretty respectable pitch). Unless he threw a fireball, Bush's pitch would have been sent into the parking lot behind the center field seats by a real batter, and Snoop's would have been lined into left field or straight to the short if he was facing a good hitter. (Otherwise it's right up there among the top ones.) Clinton's change-up, Sotomayor's and McConaughey's throws and Johnson's sinker would have been strikes. I doubt that anyone would have chased Austin's pitch, as good as it was, so that would have been a called ball. Maddux would have been issued a warning from the umpire following his brush-back. The best pitches defense-wise were Johnson's ace throw right to the floor of the strike zone (the best one in the diagram, but that would be expected coming from the Big Unit), and surprisingly, Sotomayor's. Her throw against the RH batter silhouette hit the upper inside corner of the s.z. and would have been quite difficult to hit. Obama's and Jordan's WPs are just embarrassing. And Nolan Ryan must have thrown his left-handed while seated and wearing a blindfold, because that's the only explanation for it.
Throws like a girl ....
I don't even like baseball, but Mo'ne is pretty awesome. Also, too, Sotomayor seems to be brushing that batter back.

But wait, aren't you Econs all about the numbers and stats? Seems like a short walk from one to the other.

Possible Drudge headline: "First B**** Throws Out First Pitch"?

Other than being a bit too low, the feline didn't "throw" a bad pitch.
And I'd cut Fiddy some slack. After all he's been through a lot. Probably had trouble with his grip.
