All of this is true, but the thing I find they have no answer for is the fact that the far left didn't want him to run in the primaries and he did anyway.

For me, the most upsetting part is that neither Haley nor her minions even know what socialism is. Socialism: "a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole."https://languages.oup.com/g...

At no point has Biden or any other mainstream Dem suggested taking over the auto companies, for example. President Obama even bailed their asses out so they could continue to exist as privately owned corporations.

Repubs "win" arguments by changing what words mean. We need to call them on that. Until then we're not even talking about the same thing. It's like the guy who was glad that ObamaCare was going to repealed 'cause he got his health insurance through the ACA.

What puzzles me is why most discussions of the subject assume that capitalism and socialism are 100% exclusive of each other. There is no problem with some things being capitalistic, while others are socialized. Society should make sure that necessities like food, housing, health care, education, etc., are available to all citizens. That requires socially funded programs and fair wages. Non-necessities like jewelry can be for-profit.

Ha, I know!If the choice was ever letting the managers of capital, or a democratically elected govt, solve our biggest and worst problems, the American people made that choice in 1932. And mostly ever since. And it wasn't for the capitalists.

I don't consider myself a socialist either. I consider myself a European-style Social Democrat - someone who has no problem with making sure that the big Capital folks - Big Finance, Agriculture, Manufacturing, Energy, Retail, Digital, etc. are responsible to stakeholders, not just shareholders, and that those towards the top of the ladder get enough of a trim that no one at the bottom gets a decent bottom line.

“Socialism...has failed everywhere it has been tried”

Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden are on line one for you, Ms Haley.

It is a cliche at this point that when Americans are polled about “socialism” they hate it but when asked if they support socialist principles like access to healthcare and education they think it’s a great idea.

My boss asked me once if I wanted to be taxed like they are in places like Sweden. My answer was “If I could have their quality of life, hell yes!”

As a resident for decades of the Australian state called Victoria, I remember when such basic utilities as gas. electricity and water were state government departments. They worked pretty efficiently and prices were actually reasonable. This, I don't doubt, was because the mug customer at least had the recourse, if screw-ups became too gross, of voting the state government out of office.

Then a Victorian premier had the brilliant idea of selling the utilities off to private companies in order to restore Victoria's triple-A credit rating, which had slipped somewhat. We were assured that this would lower the gas and water rates due to competition and the inexorable hand of the market making the utilities more efficient.

So it was written, and so it was done.

Rates went through the bloody roof and headed for the stratosphere. The mug customers had no comeback at all if they weren't satisfied. In theory we could go to another gas or electricity company, but crikey, they're all hand in glove and they're all devoted to keeping prices high.

And of course the state's triple-A credit rating, restored, only meant what it does for an individual, as far as I can see. Victoria could again get massive loans at larcenous interest rates which it had no bloody chance of repaying before the sun goes cold.

Again, from what I can see, it works that way everywhere.

But socialism is terrible.

I think the spectre still haunts capital. The 2008 was a classic capital markets bubble, textbook "Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism" stuff.

We have effectively been in a long crisis of capital since. Depressions and recessions cause it to rear its head, and things like the Wagner Act, Social Security, and civil rights tamp it down again.

But with the destruction by the IMF and Foggy Bottom of the deformed workers state, social welfare capitalism has been under assault, and workers control of the means of production off the table.

It's the end of history, ya know?
