The Platonic Ideal Of Cheesy Thanksgiving Photos It's Thanksgiving Day, so as we gather together with (or hide from) our families, however functional or dysfunctional they may be, let us remember the true meaning of any American holiday: It's an opportunity to pound home a political lesson about why We Are Good and They Are Bad. It's a
Apparently I've been taught wrongly on a great many things. According to the evangelicals Jeebuss was a gun toting, six packed capitalist with a blood lust for wiping out liberals. Who would have guessed?
I am glad that my family has embraced my independence and as a colocated clan, does not require attendance at "holidays". Because we see each other all the time any way! And the BF cooked a feast, as he likes too, and I "rewarded" him as he desires, as well. Thank Gawd for Hangouts and FB!
I have often wondered if SOME of the problem with laziness at Jamestown was not due to the fact that the first settlers were all male. When there are no woman around to protect or impress or compete for, men sometimes become quite shiftless. It's not always true, but it is often true. But I read that the main reason they were shiftless was that none or very few of the first settlers were actually experienced farmers. Most of them didn't even know how to fish. They nearly starved to death while living surrounded by nature's abundance.
I've often wondered what would have happened if they had discovered the Natives smoking marijuana, and exported weed back to Europe instead of tobacco.
Yes, it's a fascinating period. King Charles I was just as much a nutter in his own way as the Puritans. Talk about stubborn and arrogant! His son James II was just as bad, possibly worse, since he had his father's example before him and did not learn anything from it. There was definitely something odd about the Stuarts. Bad blood from Lord Darnley's family??? Who can say.
I read a fascinating book by Antonia Fraser called "The Weaker Vessel" which is a study of the lives of English women during that century. Much of it is taken from diaries and letters written by these women. It's an excellent book, partly because one rarely reads about what happened to the women left behind during war and times of great political and social upheaval. I highly recommend it.
Overdoses on Oxy, FTW!
I thought Moses wrote the DoI. Or maybe it was Jeebus.
Like the poor, the libertardians will always be with us.

Yes, and Winthrops and Salstonstalls and Dudleys. These families brought their SERVANTS with them to the New World.
