Thank you for sharing this. Jeff Sharlet has been shouting from the rooftops and firing warning flares for so long Netflix even made a documentary (back in the Before Times/2018).

This is why people are ignoring the DCCC and the establishment dems. The establishment dems and the DCCC will drive their trolley over anyone they think is in the way, but it we do our bit together we can pull up the rails.

In the vein of “not following the establishment”, I hope you’ve been following this discussion also —

In the spirit of cautious optimism  - I would like to think that this thing that has come out in the comparative open, when it has stayed buried for years and has been unaddressable thereby, if we get it successfully wrangled with perhaps it will stay “wrangled” for long enough for the country (and, really, the world) to make some actual progress.

The hot take, from JSC (replete with facts)

On the “what Black people don’t owe” subtopic Kenny raised – which always seems to raise hackles – I would like to also insert a couple of TILs that flip the script on what’s “owed” and to whom, bc I didn’t know the extent to which without the contributions of Black Congresspeople elected post-Reconstruction, public education as traditionally constructed in the United State would not exist

I'm really enjoying the joy and warmth that FIFA has has brought to the United States. I was not expecting the joy that all the teams and fans would bring to our benighted shores, but HOLY SHIT it's great to see friends in good spirits!

We're not all terrible here, and it's so, so heartening to see our awkward enthusiasm and hospitality on display, in spite of our shitty authoritarian assholes, and abysmal understanding of geography.

At my work (I ve beeb there just a couple of months) the secretary for my division is the only one who seems to know what’s going on and tell me how to do things regularly. Everyone else doesn’t know or won’t answer questions, or aren’t around. I love her, plus her attitude and intelligence, but she is miserable and looking to quit (but wants another state job).

So I made a couple of calls and she got an interview that same day and thinks it went well and now like an idiot I might have helped my only help leave me!

"M"'s avatar

I bet if she's considering it (and you hint in that delicate way you can manage) she can find a replacement who can be a help to you, should she get a better offer that you helped her to obtain

If women all helped each other we'd beat the Old Boy Network with the proverbial one hand tied behind

Smoke O'Possum's avatar

You're awesome! You helped her, but she was leaving anyway. You made a friend also too!

When someone does the right thing for you and helps your career like this, you remain forever grateful. And when an opportunity to talk your benefactor up or do them a good turn arises, you do it.

So it’s decent person behavior and even a good long-term workplace strategy, but I know that shot-myself-in-the-foot feeling from helping talented people get promoted away from being my helpers.

I helped someone who was barely literate write a cover letter for a job I was also going for. I thought he deserved a fair shot. He got the job. We shoot ourselves in the foot sometimes.

STORY TIEM! This is for Reader again. This is "What I done did learn" because I've done a lot of shit and I hope I've learned.

The most important thing is not to be a bellend. I have trouble with this and I am a bellend a lot of the time.

I've done all kinds of crazy-ass shit. Mostly medical related. Here's what I like - I am genuinely helping people. I'm not using healthcare as a money machine. No. I want to help people.

That way I can look at myself in the mirror. Sure I make a lot of money but that's because I'm good at it. I would hate myself if it were just for the money.

So I do the thing where I aim for the unreachable star. I'm a complete fuckhead. But I try. And I try to help people. And some people think I'm dreadful. But I fucking try.

"And the world will be better for this

That one man, scorned and covered with scars

Still strove, with his last ounce of courage

To reach the unreachable star!"

When my dad died (1968) the rabbi who did the funeral service had never met him; knew zip about him. I wrote out the lyrics for The Impossible Dream and told him to use that. He was an educated man and tied it in with Cervantes; it was a good sendoff for a total stranger.

Zyxomma's avatar

That looks like SO much fun.

I have seen all of that in you, and I never buy the bellend gruffness. And man, I always say, imagine if we all just tried, in our own little corner, to make the world better, what a world it would be.

I was going to do a somewhat complex season rub for the pot roast tomorrow, but I found a couple packets of Lipton onion soup mix. YAY! That will be a time saver.

Babe Paley's avatar

I was thinking about that when you mentioned it earlier—the day before only pot roast I make is Mississippi pot roast in the slow cooker (and it’s mainly seasoned with the soup mix).

paul's avatar

I saw that Mississippi pot roast also calls for peppers and their juices. Pretty much the same method I use.

My project for the day.

I've been playing with the $29 Amysynth and could not resist upgrading it with a OLED display and a rotary encoder. And a steel box from the 50s or 60s I'd say.

https://bsky.app/profile/theblurgler.bsky.social/post/3mpchvoognc2q

So I got:

A poly synth with 16 channels. Selectable waveforms, envelopes and filters for each.

128 Juno 6 patches

128 DX 7 patches

Sequencer

Audio in for sampling and effects

CV in and outs

Eurorack ready (I didn't want to put something digital in my rack, so I made mine standalone)

Fully programmable in python and other languages

Expandable with IC2 controllers, sensors, etc.

OLED screen (optional extra)

Rotary encode (optional extra)

Total spent: About $55

Shane Donnell's avatar

That is cool as fuck. Run it through a '62 Telefunken.

Pope Scipio Newburyporticus's avatar

That would probably be worth more than all of the rest of my musical equipment combined.

Why is something I have been paying into since 1980 t0 now called an entitlement program?

pskbh's avatar

My mother used to call it 'on the dole'. I quit trying.

paul's avatar

She wasn't even close to getting it.

Bitter Scribe's avatar

Because you're entitled to it. Assholes have made "entitlement" a dirty word because they conflated it with having an "entitled" attitude.

2Cats2Furious's avatar

I think some have switched to calling it an “earned benefit,” precisely because of the fuckery done to the word entitlement.

"Trump's Board of Peace seeks blanket immunity as draft plan allows members to dodge prosecution"

"WASHINGTON, DC: A leaked draft resolution governing President Donald Trump's Board of Peace for Gaza has revealed a controversial legal framework that would grant sweeping immunity to board members, contractors and international security personnel while giving Trump, as chairman, authority to waive those protections with majority approval from the governing board."
