My stubborn 85 year old father, after 30 years of staying in Florida for a few weeks every winter, has decided not to go this year. Not for health issues, he's fine, but because of Trump and his fascist regime. Although he hopes to outlive Trump, he says he doesn't really feel secure going back to a place where something like Trump could happen once, let alone twice.
This reminds me of a Reddit post I saw earlier this year (and may have mentioned here before): a woman whose husband had been offered a nice, lucrative job in the US with [Unnamed Company] was wondering if things were really as bad as they seemed and whether they ought to take the bai- er, job anyway.
EVERY SINGLE REPLY that I saw was some variation of, Girl, Run. Not a single person said Nah, it's not that bad, come on over. I truly hope that couple found something in a nice, civilized, *normal* country somewhere.
Ta, Evan. So, I suppose next time we go to, say, South Dakota to visit old friends on the Rez, we won't be hearing all the languages of the globe being spoken at Jewel Cave or Wind Cave or The Badlands. That's a fucking shame, because we plan on getting plenty of mileage out of my senior lifetime National Parks pass. Admission to Shenandoah alone would have been 150% of what I paid for the pass, so it's already more than paid for itself, but we LOVE National Parks and intend to take full advantage. Oh, and to be fair, every time but one I vacationed in the Caribbean, there were plenty of Canadian tourists.
You know, the people who are still coming are probably the people who 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 to come here for work or other responsibilities. If you subtracted those out, almost no one would be coming here.
As some of y'all know, I had a long trip planned back to the US this year from my home in Australia to spend time with my mother before her dementia worsens to the point that she doesn't know me.
Unfortunately my health and finances won't afford any political/legal issues- even the travel would have taken a lot out of me in and of itself. And while I've never promoted hate, I have also never hidden my lack of support for Trump and the authoritarians who love him.
So instead I'm calling my mom routinely and I'm writing a long poem reflecting on our complicated relationship.
I've seen how Florida's Ron DeSantis is making statements about how it's so horrible that Florida is losing Canadian snowbirds. Sure, he may have had little to do with the Felonious Fucks' policies per immigration, but hearing him weep about this ( considering he has been desperately trying to outdo Stephen Miller's xenophobic policies in the last few years ) is pretty much the ultimate in schadenfreude
MrsBL and I have spent a fair amount of time in Europe since Don ascended to the presidency again. We're generally in accommodations that cater to well-to-do tourists, so we encounter a fairly global group of dinner-guests-at-the-next-table and whatnot.
Two observations:
1) They're unfailingly polite.
2) They're extremely sympathetic toward us when we unabashedly say this isn't "the American Way."
We don't hide our political preferences, and we've yet to be ostracized for not being Trumpers. I doubt that would be the case if we swung the other way.
This may be class-ist, but it strikes me that Europeans probably aren't confronted by a lot of Trumpers because, frankly, I doubt most of them can afford a trip to Europe.
I can tell you that in my experience as an expat in Spain, i've only encountered one Trumper in the community. Why would they leave the US? They think they're living in heaven-on-earth and Europe is full of commie anarchists.
Next they’ll be blocking our borders so decent Americans can’t leave à la The Iron Curtain. It’s already soviet rationing and N. Korea style military goons.
"all of whom expressed a desire to visit the US … someday. But not today. Maybe in a few years when all this (*gestures wildly*) is over."
Assuming, of course, that there's any US *left* when all this is over. Something that seems less and less likely with every day the Trump administration continues.

Thanks Dump.
Why would anyone want to visit this (suddenly) shithole country?
Fuck Ted Cruz.
Why do MAGAs cheer when Trump mocks "affordability" in that stupid voice? Not that his voice isn't always stupid. Do they not know wtf the word means?
……..whining that we can’t get immigrants from Norway or Denmark, only the “shithole” countries…….
Trump is too stupid to know there aren’t that many people in Norway - and why leave a country with UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM?

Fuck Trump. Fuck all of this.
Not to mention they are raising prices for foreign tourists for the most popular national parks. That ought to bring in more tourists.

I'm afraid to leave the country. They will take one look at my social media at passport control and tell me it's no returns.

I don't see the problem.
