There was a union involved. I would assume meetings are always recorded when there is a union involved.

Just gonna mention here that in very strong democrat areas where a GOPer can't get elected for pooper scooper, we're gonna have to start vetting our people at the primary level a bit more closely.

"Anyways, back to redistricting…"

These people have been running this city for HOW LONG?! President Biden is calling for them to resign! At least we call out our own racist pigs, instead of rallying around them, like the MAGAts are doing with Herschel and Kanye.

FUCK!

"In a moment of intense frustration and anger, I let the situation get the best of me."

Wrong, Nuri. You're a dyed-in-the-wool racist pig. Fuck you, and fuck Rick Caruso.

OMG, Stephen Robinson, you are DaBomb! I love your writing and your great columns. And your line that "You know she was a Democrat because she resigned" is awesome. I had actually been thinking about that myself just a bit earlier. Please keep up the good work!

If you took all my step mother's friends-- the most run of the mill friends of hers I ever met-- who used to ask my measurements and about my 'boyfriends' and then my step mother would tell me later how many times I'd embarrassed her in front of her friends and I'd say, 'they're so mean to every kind of person except Greeks! But they're mean to Greeks too.' Then-- silent treatment! Anyway, I'm completely surprised that this woman sounds exactly as ordinary as they did. Being in government didn't add one idea to her brain or one bit of interest to her daily life beyond what those women had. Maybe I'm wrong but she didn't sound frustrated either-- just schmoozing.

She was kidding I bet, about the whistleblower. The whistleblower was a great person.

Nah. This would be a different move altogether. Prancing around as callous racists.

Being a resident of LA and infuriated by the way the redistricting process actually played out, I will say this much.

After the census (so every 10 years) the council districts in LA are redrawn. LA has a weak mayor system, which means that the City Council is kinda it. The head of the Council (who was Nury Martinez) holds a great deal of power.

My Councilcritter was termed out, which meant I was getting someone new, regardless. I attended endless Zoom sessions about where my neighborhood was going to be and who would wind up as my new rep on the Council. After many, many seemingly endless meetings, I, and the other people in those meetings were assured that we were heard and listened to.

Well, guess what? I’m now stuck in the Council District of a person who I would never have voted for and will never vote for when she’s up for re-election.

What I’m saying is that, yes, Nury Martinez and Kevin DeLeon and Gil Cedillo said some terrible racist things, but the crap they talked about carving up the city’s districts to benefit themselves and their communities at the expenses of everyone else is far, far worse. They’re just as bad as Buford and Bubba and Tiny in East Earmuff, Alabama deciding which electoral district all them poor Black people are going to be crammed into so that their votes won’t count when the time comes.
