I watched him-- I was so mad-- his method was to say with his wiggly head as if sorry to have to say it-- 'Some people blame our nation for having so many people in the prisons... etc and not the people themselves' It was something that started like that but at the end I wondered 'then how does he figure that there are so many more black men in prison than whites?' But he seemed to believe he was so lovable so no questions would be asked! But he wasn't..

Here's a really good article from someone who watched Reagan's rise to power in California, when he didn't need to pretend to be a genial grandfather. Spoilers, Reagan was a terrible human being with not a single positive impulse to be seen.

Oh lord. I'm going to get so mad. Ok thank you. Btw, I think Pat Brown must have been pretty nice. I saw that during the uprising at Berkeley he went before them and he said, "I can't make you all happy." That's the sweetest thing I ever heard a politician say. Like he was their dad. That's really all I know about him.

As a sadistic religious zealot, Mother Teresa should be hated regardless of what party she backed.

"Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually people will believe it." If the Nazis hadn't said that in the 1930s, Frank Luntz would have had to have coined the phrase.

The idea that Democrats forgot how to talk to the working class is yet another lie, perpetuated by the right, filtered through the MSM, and trickled into the rest of the nation. Just like Good on Economy, and Affirmative Action takes away white kid spots, and being simultaneously Coastal Elites and degenerate slackers. Obama being "intelligent! well spoken!" triggering fascism is just another one of those things; After all TFG did a trial run before the goddamn WHCD.How the fuck supposed liberals fall for ANY of this is beyond me: it is pretty damn blatant that all of that shit is lies.

Some white liberals might latch onto the narrative that Democrats forgot how to "talk" to working-class white people during the Obama years because that's more comforting than admitting that racism had anything to do with the Tea Party rallies where Obama was burned in effigy.

This is the identical criticism that has been leveled at Democrats since Reagan stole white union voters by making racism sound folksy and normal. It has fuck-all to do with anything Obama said or did, and probably not much to do with his race either.

In 1980 liberals had reason to be pissed at the Democratic party. It had worked so hard to go centrist that it ran one weak candidate after another, all mediocre, decent white men. Bill Clinton broke that self-inflicted losing streak, and however many criticisms we have about him, we owe him a lot for that.

Tim Scott, Herschel Walker, Nicky Haley, Bobby Jindal, and every other Republican of color owes their very existence to Bill Clinton's success in refocusing the Democratic party away from its endless parade of Hubert Humphreys and Mike Dukakises and Edmund Muskies. All good and reasonable politicians with zero charisma.

Obama's charisma is off the charts. If Bill Clinton was magnetic, Obama is the kind of magnet that can lift a schoolbus in the air.

In the case of Reagan, the criticism isn't entirely false. Reagan wooed white blue-collar voters very successfully, and the Dems had grown complacent about that bloc.

I dunno, that would appear to include middle-school drop-outs.

Can, too!

Reagan had a lot of help wooin' them by making deals behind the actual president's back with enemy combatants and oil companies just to make said president look badI mean, Jimmy was THE proverbial folksie blue collar working dude, after all.

Edit: rather than complacent, I suspect, rather strongly, that the wooing of the white working class was because the Democrats would not dumb "those" people.Cause that is basically what St.Ronnie ran on. That and Iran Hostages and Oil.

Edit again: upon more reflection, the idea that the Democrats had grown complacent and ignored working whites is yet another lie. They were still working for Unions, education, a cleaner environment and all the things white working classpeople claim they want. I am now leaning towards "It was the racism in 80, also" thought. Cause again, that is what Ronnie ran on

Reagan's great innovation was figuring out how to express racism in a way that didn't make a person look and feel like a Klansman, and racist Democrats liked that. Reagan showed them how to smile and say "I don't think we're serving black America through welfare, when what we should be doing is encouraging them to get on their feet and be proud of themselves". Same racism, a lot less overt talk about "those people just want handouts!"
