Rachel Maddow (9/21) did a typically excellent job of breaking down why we have a "debt ceiling."

Highly recommended!

This show wasn't entertaining the first time. What are we on now, Slow and Stupid 9? Or is it 10?

I want them to default, just to see what happens. When I defaulted in the aught, I got a bunch of mean phone calls. Then I got a mean lawyer. Then, I got a new truck. I don't see what the big deal is. Congress is full of mean lawyers... do they not want a new truck?

Just looked it up - thischas nothing to do with the founding fathers. Up until 1995 there was an automatic rule called the "Gephardt rule" that deemed the debt ceiling raised when a budget was passed. The Republicans scrapped it when they gained control of Congress under Clinton. The Senate filibuster has nothing to do with the founding fathers - it was created unintentionally in 1806 when the existing rules for closing a debate (which required a simple majority) were scrapped whilst accidentally omitting to replace them. The result was that as long as someone was still talking no further business could be conducted until they stopped. Various different procedural rules were adopted for closing debate over the years. The current rule that allows a "filibuster" blocking a particular bill if there aren't 60 votes to support it only dates to 1975.

When they wreck the economy, as they have wrecked our political system, they will blame Biden, Schumer, Pelosi, etc and they count that as a win. They are Iraq in 2004, there is no concern for causing collateral damage or killing innocent civilians, only victory matters. It would be difficult for them to be more treasonous even if they gave the launch codes to China.

The French clog the streets of Paris, Nice etc if the government threatens to take their free Opera tickets away to save money, we could learn a thing or two from them about large scale activism.

They were flogging a poll that has Biden at 34% approval or something earlier. Lower than TFG was at any point, does that sound kosher? Who did they poll, Merde-a-lago members and Ohio diner patrons?
