Imagine going back to your constituents and saying really sorry guys I tried to take away all your benefits but I could only manage to take away most of them, hope that's good enough.

Well see the key is framing it so they understand that you were really taking away those people's benefits.

Who uses coal to heat their house now? Sure, there are still cool powered electricity generating plants in operation but they are being replaced by cheaper methods. Besides, who is talking about taxing coal anyway, mine operators may just lose some subsidies, making cheaper and cleaner alternatives come around sooner.

As this article mentions, Manchin proposes ending anything that may benefit the middle class, like free tuition at community college and pre-K and child care. People that are at lower middle class incomes are stretched because paying child care for two kids may eat up all of one income. In that case it's hard to justify working and sending your kids to day care instead of staying home. Which may affect your earnings the rest of your working life.

In addition, often means testing ends up doing nothing to improve living standards. If your benefits are cut dollar for dollar above a certain near poverty level, getting a $25 a week raise does nothing if it cuts your benefits by $25, or even worse, that $25 a week kicks you off Medicaid, meaning you have no health insurance. Manchin has managed to put so many land mines in his demands that passage of any of it is questionable.

You'd think just once these selfish pricks could do something for the people who voted for them, instead of the rich, but you'd be wrong.

The Republican Party (of International Money Launderers) wants the US to become a mirror of post-Soviet Russia. Chaos, then profit is their North Star.

I’m still convinced Dems can negotiate with Manchin and get him to a yes. Sinema, though, seems impossible. She’s all but said her vote is for sale and may have already been bought.

Means testing is a way to make the poors jump through hoops to watch them stumble and not get the help the programs are trying to provide.

The US is not now and never has been an entitlement society, its however a democracy (of some sort) and it sure seems pretty stupid that a majority of people keep continually handing all the economic benefits of their society to the top 10%, but here we are. . .

As noted before, the government is more than happy to spend several Trillions more on the military industrial complex than they will on its people. Something is fucked up.
