Sooo, Robert Newton was the Chuck Yeager of pirate-speak... Good thing he didn't pick a different accent, some strain of deep Glaswegian, one of those distinct Weegie ones, idiosyncratic and loaded with regional slang... I was going to try a phonetic rendering of such an accent, but between the limits of my ear and the efforts of autocorrect...
The rain on the plain has thwarted me again... Maybe I'll pick a project and tinker on it until everyone else is crazy too...
Lots of piracy going on now. Everybody seizing or blowing up ships, and we're not talking about indies, we're talking about nation states. They try to dignify it with highfalutin talk about sanctions, but generally it amounts to theft of resources or political aggression to the same end. We have regressed to feudalism, but nobody seems to realize it, because we think we're so modern.
I heard that Capt Jack Sparrow as portrayed by Johnny Depp was not in the script. Rumors on the set that he was gonna do it in his interpretation, but keep it a secret, and esp don't tell Eiger cause he was a big poopy head and didn't want to do a pirate movie anyway. He would find out but it would be too late to re shoot. Turns out the biggest problem on the set was for people to stop laughing long enough to shoot a scene. Oh and Keira Knightley really did jump into the water.
Avast! Honestly, the first Pirate's movie was pretty good, Johnny Depp was born for that role, and did it with a huge twinkle in his eye, and the homage to Keith Richards was a romp. But, there is no better pirate ever than the well spoken Hector Barbossa played with gusto by Geoffrey Rush.
Some of my friends still do Talk Like a Pirate Day, as harmless fun going to a Red Lobster as a tradition. I guess the world could use a little bit of whimsy even as we are in Gilded Age 2.0!
i just fired off a happy "talk like a pirate day" text to my grandchildren. some years ago, as out-of-state grandma, i got to babysit them for pirate weekend, and we had a pirate scavenger hunt and made up our own pirate song and wore earrings and headscarves and eyepatches. for reasons i do not currently recall, i declared that the fancy lemonade in the bottle with a metal clasp top was "pirate grog" and have bought it for them ever since.
i always hope they remember this with the same fondness i do. well, possibly the one who was sick may be less impressed. but he's in the Navy now, so i must have done something... right?
ETA: I had a weird dream along those lines a few months back. I went into a store and all the employees were wearing different costumes and I asked what was going on. One of the workers told me that the world is going to shit and everything sucks so why not wear costumes and have fun?
She's belowdecks when her ship is attacked by (Turks? Moroccans?) the crew is flailing, as she boils up from below, her infant son strapped to her chest, pistol in one hand, cutlass in the other, shouting, "AM I THE ONLY MAN AMONG YE?"
I wish this was something that happened for every high school graduating class. I truly believe that if more young men experienced their fathers expressing emotions and discussing how they feel about their lives so far, that we would begin to see a more emotionally capable male society.

Last year I found a shirt I got in college. It was 23 sizes too small. Tore up, stained, a rag.
Had to toss it. Funny how clothes change in a half century.
