OK, I didn't know about the letters to his wife, but my favorite Allen West story is still the time he bought some booze at Wal-Mart in Florida, and there was a teenaged cashier whose line was marked "no alcoholic beverages."West wrote a column about it. Actually there were quite a few politicians who asked Obama for clemency. The lawyer who brought it up at the lunch had been in the service (Navy?) stationed on a ship that was somehow endangered for whatever spy thing the guy had done, or somehow had been involved in catching him. (Sorry my recollection is not so great on details, but the lawyer guy had some personal connection to the consequences of the spy stuff so was particularly irate that West was advocating clemency.)
