If he was that out of control publicly, I can only imagine the nightmare his wife and children were living before she left.

I was in an abusive relationship in college. It lasted 9 months. If I had left at the first Red Flag, it would have been over in a month. Near the end it became pretty obvious to everyone. But the only person who could get me out of it was me.

When I am in a position to give advice to others experiencing Partner Abuse, I tell them 3 things.

One: It is never their fault. Not even if they decide to stay. No one has the right to abuse another human being.

Two: Plan their escape but listen to their gut. If at any point when they go to implement their plan and their gut screams at them it isn’t safe? Then listen to their guts. The most dangerous day in an abused person’s life (and their children’s if they have any) is the day they leave - their abuser is at their most lethal when they realize their victims are gone.

Three: Never, ever feel guilty about what they do to protect themselves and their children.

I'm not generally a fan of the gut as decision-making organ, but in this case it's more than fine.

If his fellow Republicans wanted him to resign, he must be very unpleasant to work with. Sort of a "reheats fish in the break room microwave" co-worker. They use do not demand a resignation after one of them does something criminal or heinous.

Well, the GOP has a 2/3 majority in both the state house and senate, so one person resigning isn't going to hurt them and his actions were so egregious and (more importantly) reported on makes this an easy choice and easy good PR for them in the state.

And what percentage of these kinds of stories come from the right wing of our government? A very, very high percentage I would say. Could this be the result of decades of toxic macho assholes trying to convince people that he with the biggest dick is the strongest and the smartest "man" in the room? Perhaps? Just asking questions here.

Well, the Biggest Dick may be their front runner (though that description is far from physical).

"campaign ads in which he falsely accused his then-opponent, Matt Shaughnessy, of having committed domestic violence 20 years ago." ALWAYS PROJECTION WITH THESE JACKOFFS.......

And, whataboutism! Or maybe he didn't even realize the surprising similarity between what he was claiming his enemy did once long ago, and what he liked to do all the time now! And that would be a fourth pattern-- not realizing things they're doing.

I seem to detect a pattern between a tendency to gravitate toward conservative beliefs and the use of violence as a practical solution to problems.

I too have detected a similar pattern. Perhaps we have something here....

He seems nice. When the thing you are “looking forward to” is an unlikely acquittal on charges that you hit your wife, destroyed her means of calling for help and attacked her family, you are a Republican!

"Ironically, Young is also currently being sued for defamation over campaign ads in which he falsely accused his then-opponent, Matt Shaughnessy, of having committed domestic violence 20 years ago. "

It really is all projection with these people, isn't it?
