There’s an old saying in politics, “if you’re explaining, you’re losing.” And there’s some truth to that. That’s why “defund the police” was always a terrible slogan. By the time you explain what is meant by it, republicans have already embedded “no police and the criminals run rampant” in people’s minds.
More important than explaining is listening to what voters’ concerns are. Then you can explain how your policy ideas will help them. That’s how you sell progressive ideas.
And it’s tough since we’re working against 30 years of organized rightwing propaganda spearheaded by Fox and beamed into people’s homes every day.
But this is where the door to door canvassing pays off. A lot of rural communities feel like they’ve been forgotten by politicians. Meeting people where they are sends the message that you care.
And the champion of this has to be Josh Turak. The image of him dragging his wheelchair up several steps to reach people’s homes was very powerful. It’s how he turned a long shot campaign in Iowa into a victory.
Miss Blondy Blonde Blondster is sporting a couple of substantial chunks of ice on her earlobes up there. She's doing TOO well IMHO. She and her ilk are one of the reasons running a campaign has become so expensive. And I'll never forgive them for telling Tim Walz to stop calling Republicans weird! They are fucking weird.
Um, hello. It's me, Linda who lives in Texas and quit posting because it was all a little overwhelming and I had to step away.
First of all, wow. I went to bed on Nov. 3rd thinking that maybe we'd have a new Agriculture Commissioner when I got up and holy shit. Everything flipped. All of it. I'm still processing it.
It's a fucking miracle is what it is. My youngest is 32 and Texas has not had a Democratic governor since before he was born.
Anyway, I've retired. My husband retired. That's a little weird. I miss the students, but not the workplace or the hours or driving to work with trucks that have five rows of headlights all set on stun.
I guess I'll have to change my username. Sorry I was gone for so long.
You're good. ISP and the county do a decent job of discouraging drivers from taking to the highway with the offroad lights on, but I do encounter vehicles with both lights trained on the oncoming traffic from damage. I suspect approaching retirement will do little to abate that risk.
Any name will do if you're commenting sincerely, I think.
I'm going to reframe point 2 for Sanders primary run going into 2020. The first three primary results did count. They were also in primarily white, rural states. The first time anyone other than mostly rural white people got to weigh in, in SC, Sanders got curb stomped.
It wasn't a conspiracy. It wasn't Clyburn using his magical Black powers to force SC voters to blackly support Biden. It was the actual base of the party getting its first chance to vote.
FFS, it's the reason Dems are trying to alternate which state holds the first primary.
I was not aware of the effort for alternating primaries, but it sounds like it has possibilities for enabling some parity in the process, which should of course make people yell.
New Hampshire is furious they're not first anymore and passeda state law that says they have to be first. Nevada and South Carolina are arguing about who should go first in 2028.
100% agreement that the consulting class are in it to give just enough good advice to get their candidates a "little" further ahead...and themselves a continuing income.
I’m furious with Chuckie for many reasons, but the latest is he and the Fla Dem party did their share to sabotage Angie Nixon’s campaign.
I can’t help but notice they ignored objective evidence. For example:
Enthusiastic voter turnout that resulted in a landslide primary win.
Experienced Community organizer with legislative experience.
Voter support among all demographics and NPA/Independents.
They withheld political and financial support from Angie until the final weeks of the campaign. Too little too late to make a difference. Top of the ticket support could have pulled Jolly over the finish line.
Now Florida Republicans will continue 4 more years of draconian legislation and voter suppression. Making it harder to succeed in the next election.
Chuckie doesn’t deserve to be SML. His prejudices were more important than creating a Senate Majority.
Agree. Nor does Mr. Jeffries deserve to be Speaker. He is ineffective. Jeffries actually wants us "move forward" (I'll bet money that was at least part of the subject matter of his and Jared Kushner's little meeting) not to concentrate on accountability on account of it would look like "getting even". Don't we EVER learn? This was done before and it set us up for ever more flouting of norms and laws.
I say pursuing criminal actions and corruption would not look like "getting even". It would look like JUSTICE. Of course we must let courts and laws decide how we do this and what punishment looks like.
But how can Jeffries and other centrists even think of letting those who committed overt criminal acts and/or obvious corruption just stroll away.
The MAGA Repubbies (that's all of them) will, of course, yell like wounded banshees if they are held to account--but if we do not do so, we might just as well tell them how weak we are and that they can get away with it all. And the next red tide will be far, far worse.
I never heard of this Lis Smith, but my god, is she ever smug and condescending! According to her, actual results of actual elections don't count because reasons. Anything that turns out to contradict something she said with that smug confidence in the past, she can dismiss with smug confidence in the present by calling it an aberration or the exception that proves the rule or something.
And she's some kind of political consultant? Whatever anyone ever paid her, it was too much. I wouldn't consult with her on which font to use on a poster.
I'm totally agree with you. I am on the West Coast and hadn't been following the Florida races. And then I saw a video from someone following Angie in the Panhandle. She was so genuine and had an amazing ability to speak to the people she met about the things that mattered to them. I became an instant fan.
Just turned on the teevee to watch Nicolle shortly
Chyron right now says: Wipeout for A.I. Stocks Sends Wall Street Reeling
I guess the reality check is happening that people don't like data centers? That they might get regulated finally, no matter what the Demented Orange Traitor says?
The stock market will recover when the US government has stability.
Unfortunately the AI bubble is on the verge of collapse so things may get worse before a Democratic Administration can step up and fix the problems created by unregulated capitalism and authoritarian government takeover
Hmmm, when pressed, I "identify " as a labor democrat, because labor is how I provided for me and mine, and the concerns of labor often get shorted.
...Matt Yglesias, a ridiculous person who identifies as a “popularist"...
Yggie wants everyone to be popular?
And Vindman would have won this race along with Dave Jolly. Socialism and identity politics aren’t a winning combo.
Ask Hamilton, Talarico, Sherrod, Annie, Turek, Jocelyn, Weiser, Colom, Acton, Stratton - them and many more focused on the JOB they were applying for.

Hi, Linda. I live in Florida. I could use your username for a while. 🫤

It's been a problem.
New Hampshire is furious they're not first anymore and passeda state law that says they have to be first. Nevada and South Carolina are arguing about who should go first in 2028.
So. About what is expected.

Most of the J6’ers came from Florida. Tells you all you need to know.
Didn’t some come from Texas? Or were my neighbors just wannabes
Texas was #2. My post is misleading. Florida supplied the most.
"MAGA wing of the Republican party"???
Sorry but that is utter BS. It's been 100% MAGA since at least 2018.
I'm totally agree with you. I am on the West Coast and hadn't been following the Florida races. And then I saw a video from someone following Angie in the Panhandle. I gave to her campaign and I’ll do it again damnit!!

Thought it was Alito? Maybe they’re hoping to push him out before January.
“Well, someone like Mamdani could win in liberal New York, but not where the Real Americans live!”
In the words of Liz Lemon: "That's a nonsense phrase; all of America is real America."
No, here in the U.S., we only consider the middle bits between Canada and Mexico to be the real America.
Good thing nobody told El-Sayed.
