As Stephen points out, the hardened MAGA base will never support anyone else. If someone somehow beats Trump in the primary, that lucky candidate will go into November missing about 20 to 25% of the most reliable republican voters. No matter how many independents Nikki or Ron might attract (sadly it would be a fair amount) it won't be enough to win the general. It would probably be a down ballot slaughter as well. This inevitable damage might have been lessened if they had shit-canned Trump with firm intent on or about January 7th, but they lack all moral fiber so now it is ride or die with Trump to the ends of the republic (really a democracy).
