Read something really ironic today. As you probably know, the Chernobyl reactors have been damaged by the Russians and some highly radioactive spaces have been exposed. Ukrainian scientists have been astonished to find black molds growing in some of the most radioactive areas -- not only growing there but spreading in the direction of increasing radioactivity. It appears that the molds have rapidly evolved, and have developed an ability that no other living thing on earth has -- they can use at least some of the energy from radioactivity for their own purposes, the way photosynthesis uses sunlight. Radioactivity makes them HEALTHIER. This is astonishing because radioactivity is far more disruptive than light, and would be expected to kill or scramble living beings. It turns out that the molds have found a substance that shields them from the tissue damage, and it's something we've seen before. It's melanin -- the same stuff that makes black skin black. Some of the frogs in the area have also turned black, and it looks like they may have evolved the same ability. That's nature -- if you have a source of energy, sooner or later you find out how to use it. It's been about thirty years since the Chernobyl accidents -- they certainly didn't lose any time.
I can see some interesting stories being written on the basis of this.... It would be hilarious if all the astronauts on long space trips had to be black, since white guys were just too damn delicate to stand the environment. Or had to wear lead underwear.
Apologies are pointless kabuki, especially when the fault or crime was not committed by you. Repairing the damage is the only thing that counts. But apologies are very cheap, and easy to give if you're sufficiently shameless. Repairing damage is very difficult and tends to be expensive.
I never held people in slavery, but I know for a fact that my ancestors did. I try not to engage in expressions of sorrow for that as a kind of posing or as you put it "kabuki".
As for reparations I've done what I can. I don't see that as pointless.

As a young man I worked in the civil rights movement and marched with Dr. King. As a teacher for 30 years I tried to bring the evils of our history to light. I did and still do what I can.
