Of course they're getting the whole "rod" metaphor totally wrong.

The rod they're invoking is the shepherd's crook (which Jesus is often shown holding). Note that none of these "rod" scriptures ever talk specifically about beatings -- and that's because shepherds NEVER use the rod to beat the sheep!

The rod end is used to steer and guide the sheep. The crook end grabs them by the neck or leg and gently yanks them out of the ditch or back onto the path. It's a guidance tool, not a punitive one.

Anybody who thinks these verses justify beating kids needs to go spend more time out in the pasture with some actual sheep.
