Back in April of 1969 I stopped by El Reno (OK) High School to see my old principal and former neighbor. He told me the starting salary for a new teacher the next fall would be $5300; instead I took a job in the Chicago suburbs at $7500. As far as I could tell that ratio was still a good ballpark estimate for the salary difference when I retired in 2003. Can you imagine how much that is over 34 years?

I really hoped that noir-Woodhouse would simply have died from a heroin overdose, and Archer would have concluded that HE, if anyone, was responsible for Woodhouse's death (by not being a better friend and not getting him some kind of help). That would have tracked better with Archer's subconscious, I think.
