This Monday, the NRA announced that noted weapons trafficker and former convicted felon Oliver North would be their new President. In a world that made some kind of sense, one would think that Oliver North, of all people, would be the exact opposite of the image you would want to present, but here we are in 2018 where literally nothing makes any sense ever.
In an interview with the Washington Times, North explained that his "plan" was to get a million new NRA members signed up -- a thing he thinks he can do because gun owners feel real threatened by gun control-supporting teenagers these days. He is particularly worried about how everyone is doing all the cyberwar to them.
“They can do all the cyberwar against us — they’re doing it. They can use the media against us — they are. They’ve gone after our bank accounts, our finances, our donors, and obviously individual members,” Mr. North said. “It’s got to stop. And that’s why the leadership invited me to become the next president of the NRA.”
By "cyberwar," he appears to be referring to perfectly legal boycotts and op-eds. These are not criminal activities. They are not effective tools for criminal behavior either. If you're holding up a 7-11, what are you going to say? "Give me all your money or I will blow your brains out with this gun I purchased on the internet in a state that doesn't require a background check for such sales" or "Give me all your money or I will start a petition to boycott beef jerky on Twitter and write a strongly worded op-ed in the New York Times"?
North then claimed that the NRA was the victim of "civil terrorism."
Mr. North said the NRA is now the victim of “civil terrorism” after vandals splashed fake blood on the Virginia home of a top NRA official and other opponents aimed personal “threats” at NRA leaders and members.
Terrorism? Really? At worst it is a shitty Halloween prank. I mean, I'm not saying that anyone should go throw fake blood (which is literally just corn syrup and red food dye) on anyone's house or bologna their cars or TP the trees in their front yard, but it's certainly a far cry from terrorism . Terrorism might be a better descriptor for oh, I don't know, teenagers who instead of begging for gun control are shooting up their schools.
He then explained that no one in the history of America has had it worse than gun owners have it right now. Not even black people during Jim Crow.
“They call them activists. That’s what they’re calling themselves. They’re not activists — this is civil terrorism. This is the kind of thing that’s never been seen against a civil rights organization in America,” he said.
I think the NAACP might want to have a word or two with him about that claim. As far as I know, no one in the NRA has been bombed.
“You go back to the terrible days of Jim Crow and those kinds of things — even there you didn’t have this kind of thing,” he said. “We didn’t have the cyberwar kind of thing that we’ve got today.”
There is a certain desperation among people like North to draw comparisons to victims of actual oppression -- black people during Jim Crow, Jewish people during the Holocaust, etc. The thing of it is, they don't do it because they seriously think they are victims of oppression, but because they believe that being a victim of oppression gives one a certain impunity, and they want a piece of it. They think that if they can convince people that they, like black people, like Jewish people, are victims of systemic oppression, that they will not be questioned.
Granted, we did not have the "cyberwar kind of thing" during Jim Crow, but we did have a whole lot of other things that most thinking people can agree were worse than corn-syrup covered houses and boycotts organized on Twitter. We also had a whole lot of boycotts and petitions -- which, again, are a perfectly legal means of making one's voice heard. Unlike shoving a gun in someone's face.

Oliver North Says You Are Being WORSE THAN JIM CROW To The Poor, Weak NRA
So ... did they hire him as president because the NRA is looking toward diversifying into the growing and rewarding field of arms smuggling?
As long as I don't activate the banhammer.
