Well, as one of millions of moms, it is time to tell my gay, lesbians, and trans couple friends to stop being so glamorous and making us poor straights feel bad about ourselves.

OT!!!

Was going to go all "Kyle, Karen's husband" today and complain about a local business but instead I'm going to air a 20 year old grudge, because that's how I roll...

I was killing time on one of those "shitty employer stories" sites and was reminded of something that totally pissed me off from many years ago. It won't be brief.

Worked for a start up. Was part of a small group that drummed up new business. RFPs, POCs, other TLAs. I was the stats modeling person (what we used to call "machine learning" back in the day). If we got to a certain point in the process I would build a POC (Proof of Concept) model to show how much money we could make the client.

If new business was backed up, I'd sometimes borrow someone from one of the existing client teams for the POC (and if we were slow, I'd pitch in for them). Had a good relationship with the team, except their mediocre leader (he was technically whiz-bang but a shitty manager). I would also be involved in that team's hiring, training, etc.

We hired this very talented and super qualified woman. Grad degrees in math and econometrics from top universities. She hit the ground running and was a top performer. Elsewhere in the start up a "client support rep" was leaving to get an MBA. This was an entry level position for undergrads, being a buffer between clients and the technical people, delivering reports, setting up meetings, etc.

One of the old white guys thought the client would love our (pretty midwestern blond) technical hire. I went ballistic. Went to my boss (a woman), went to the head of the client support group (another woman I had known for years and who recruited me), went to the useless guy who was head of the modeling team, talked to the old white guy. No deal, she was "perfect" for the role she was uninterested in and way over qualified for.

Two weeks later she left for a top company in our field, where she remains (in tech) to this day. Nothing was learned.

I like how they advise "remaining neutral in the culture wars," presumably by including only heterosexual couples. You know, so straight people can pretend we don't exist and we can...just die, apparently, idk. Neutrality!

They went under. Old white guy was a "independent consultant" (unemployed) for years. Mediocre manager failed up.
