I've been thinking lately about our gender mores shifting, that MASCULINE! and FEMININE! no longer have hard & fixed definitions. And why should they? Fashions change. Babies, I am quite certain, are still getting made the old-fashioned way. I suspect that before this century is out, we will see a *much* broader ranger of gender expression, with 'classic' cis-het expressions being viewed as quaint at best. We may not ever reach the ambisexuality of Left Hand of Darkness, but I think those who are teens and younger today will wonder what all the fuss was about when it comes to who loves who and what they wear while they're doing it.
I will bet the entire contents of my pockets, minus my inhaler (pen, glitter marker, cough drops, name brand not store brand, Kleenex, random sales tag) that the day after Thanksgiving, aka Black Friday, these same moms will be doing battle at their local Macy's for all those sweet sweet deals.
No love for Fun Home? An 18 month run on Broadway ain't exactly in Phantom territory, and I doubt Andrew Lloyd Webber sits up at nights worrying about Alison Bechdel knocking him off his perch, but the first Broadway musical featuring an out lesbian protagonist surely has earned some recognition, even if is only to be denounced by Our Lady of the Imaginary Sorrows and her invisible horde.
