Paid post! The excellent and ethical folks at Penzeys are helping to support Wonkette by paying us to run this post from their Facebook page. Honestly though we would have run it for free. Cooking is where we learn the goodness caring for others brings to life—Cooking is where we find our humanity. Cook.
Inspiring story, I do hope Kristen doesn't loose her medicaid! I love Penzeys, if you haven't made pickles with their pickling spice you're missing out! And man o man, the varieties of cinnamon! You have to check out the selection at one of their stores. Who knew they could have such a range of flavors, my fav is the Vietnamese cinnamon.
I do love Penzey's, both for their products and their social conscience. I purchase their spices online since we don't have a store within a couple of hours of us.
Yup! The sushi place next door is THE BEST! Honestly, in all my years in Florida and visiting beaches I've only been to one place better than Takumi, and that was the place in Daytona Beach where Tom Cruise went when they were filming Days of Thunder.
We are so lucky to have a Penzey's in town...their spices are really good, the folks that work there are very nice, and the company puts their social conscience in front. And now they support our Wonket! Yay!

Penzey's, we need to talk. You seem like a really cool, nice company, but you seem to be a bit naive. Nobody votes for Paul Ryan because they think he's good and decent. They vote for him because they think he's going to screw poor people, which he's very, very good at. I wish you the best in Janesville.
Their Szechuan Peppercorns are amazing too....a little heat with a citrusy tang & a tingly/numby sensation. Can't make real Szechuan food like Gung Bao or Szechuan noodles without it.
Love Penzeys! I am new to them, but live in Madison, so I drop by when I'm close. I've been trying to find a source for Penzey freezer recipes. I have two active teen boys and crockpot meals are a must. I've reached out to Penzey's on Facebook, but no luck. Anybody have a favorite they'd like to share?
I drop into the Penzey's every few months to stock up but visit more often in order to geta jar of their Pasta Sprinkle--it has what you would expect: sweet basil, oregano (Turkish for some reason) thyme and garlic. It goes with a lot of dishes besides pasta--particularly good on a baked potato.
Doug and Kristen Shelton's story hit pretty hard. My wife is struggling with a malady that has many of the same symptoms. Like Kristen, she is a former health care worker on the pathology laboratory side but we didn't have to fight to finance her care--she qualified for Medicare just as her employer sponsored insurance, which she was able to maintain during 15 months of sick leave, expired. So where you live (Michigan in our case). We didn't get too worried about it though because Michigan was one of the states that took advantage of Medicare expansion--we just would have to have gone broke, like the Sheltons did.
None of this, of course, makes dealing with the terrible illness of one's spouse any easier but it does allow the caregiver more time and energy to actually give care instead of fighting with insurance companies and state agencies who really don't give a shit about their customers or citizens.
Good story, good recipes. Also, Penzey's is a great spice resource, and they do mail-order.
Ms. Zippy has a cupboard full of their wares. It's more fun to visit a store, though - the smells and samples are great.

Most excellent. I was in the Madison, WI, store just a few days ago.

It sounds like it. I'm going to give them a visit this week.

Vietnamese cinnamon is the BOMB! Also, their Mexican vanilla is great.
Oooh Sunny Paris seasoning also. Celebrate Macron winning with good food!

Hah... looks like my spice cupboard.
