I don't think he is stupid, but he makes impulsive, bad decisions, then refuses to acknowledge them for what they are. So the effect is the same. I know Josh Marshall has other thoughts on this (has even taken to referring to "Trump's Razor" in which the stupidest thing is the reason). So, ...But the contemptible acolytes who are following -- now they are stupid.
Trump could have avoided any controversy just by keeping his big fat mouth shut and letting it fade away, but no, he had to keep it in the news cycle and compound the error by getting the batshit crazy crew of Roger Stone, the Shoebat duo, Alex Jones and Blightfart to weigh in to keep it going On a side note, over at Mother Jones Kevin Drum has an interesting chart of the relative truthfulness of Trump and Clinton
Originally I thought he had created a persona, much like Stephen Colbert did. I thought he was a smart man pretending to be A idiot, to attract the A idiot GOP base...but he KEEPS acting like A idiot, so I'm starting to think he might actually be A idiot.
I don't think people with money, particularly inherited money, are necessarily intelligent, so he might just be a dumbass.
Inherited money dumbifies you. (Enstupids?) Part of intelligence is learning, and learning the hard way. Money can insulate you from that, leaving you functionally idiotic in certain ways.

John Oliver compared that to the difference between stepping on one nail and standing on a bed of them.
[Insert "Back in Soviet times something something gulag" joke here.]
