It's a good thing thay this was made by MGM instead of one of the French "novelle vague" filmmakers of the time. It could have ended up as a dark, black and white film, full of moral ambiguity and internal conflict, ...with a little nudity.

Wait, ...I'm rethinking this.

Had my Mom drop 8-year old me off at the theater to watch some monster movie. Sat down and on the screen came Maurice Chevalier singing about little girls (pervert). And yet I stayed for the whole thing. Unlike Flower Drum Song where I called and had her come pick me up.

Maurice Chevalier singing "Thank Heaven" is a lot less creepy than Gérard Depardieu singing it, though ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110612/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_my%2520father%2520the%2520hero ).

Shifting to OT for a moment. Yesterday I talked about Ohio lege looking into phasing out the state income tax. I watched the show that was on again late last night and the first part of it was the Senate overriding two vetoes--the transgender care ban and the flavored tobacco ban--and let me say some of the debate was absolutely batshit insane. Just some of the most blatantly disingenuous arguments you could think of.

On the tax thing, it's not only the individual income tax but also the Commercial Tax; the host pointed out that eliminating both would cut 13 bil in revenue from the state general fund that's currently 86 bil (~15%). Insane.

Even if they heard it, their brains would not allow them to not pronounce it as spelled.

Kerfluffle is a fine name.

On the Walmart thing, though, yeah, they are the fucking worst. I work in the field of catching bad guys who do bad stuff with money, and Walmart from their gift cards to their bill payment service to their Western Union branches are 100% uninterested in doing even minimal fraud or anti-money laundering prevention. They just try to fob it all back off on the banks, but since the system they were using to do that was voluntary, the banks finally told them to get fucked until they fixed their practices, we weren't going to be their anti-financial crimes department anymore.

Pasta definitely makes me happier. We have it at least twice a week.

Tonight I'm making some with a pesto made from spinach leaf stems, since I have a gazillion of them left from making spanakopita this weekend. All those recipes for spinach dishes that include the instruction "Cut off the stems and discard"? Discard those recipes!

Also too, for pesto, since pine nuts are so expensive, one can use other nuts. I happen to have some pine nuts, but I'm extending them with pistachios, which is what are used in some Sicilian pesto anyway (then there's that pesto from Trapani that uses almonds and tomatoes, which is amazing). The combination of pine nuts and pistachios is a marvel. In fact, I think I prefer pesto made with pistachios. More alliterative, for one thing.

Also three, I've discovered a brand of pasta new to me - Felicetti - which is made in the Dolomites. It's hands down the best dry pasta I've ever found. It's pretty expensive for pasta, so it won't be a regular item in our kitchen. But for special pasta dishes, I will probably splurge once in a while.

One has to wonder if halting new LNG exports will lead to a glut in the US market for gas. The amount of natural gas already produced in the US gas already led to lower prices - does anyone think that shutting off more exports will lead to even lower prices ( or will there be price supports coming )?

And this as more municipalities (mine included) are phasing in bans on new gas hookups. Exxon or whothefuckever are gonna have to get used to the hand of the free market slapping them around in short order.

I'm ashamed to say that I had written off Penn Jillette after I'd heard he was a libertarian. Because, well, you know. Had I known he was capable of growth and self-reflection I might have assumed that he would eventually grow out of that stage of arrested development to which libertarians are doomed. I may not agree with him but I'd rather argue with someone who's capable of change than someone who does nothing but adhere to dogma. Good to know and good on you Mr Jillette.

Non-whole grain pasta is simply starch. That starch is easily and quickly broken down into the sugar components that make up the starch polymer. Saying you'll feel happy after you eat pasta is like saying you'll be happy eating a slice of chocolate cake. Our bodies reward us when we find and consume things rich is easily digestible carbs. One to two hours later, however....

I've found this is one of those places where the big "L" vs little "l" can make a lot of difference. The big "L" Libertarian party are just Koch Brothers wannabes or "Republicans who want to smoke pot", but I've met a lot of sincere small "l" types whose political philosophy is more of the "don't bother my shit and I won't bother your shit" variety that I can hang with, though the definitions of "bother" and "shit" are very important there.

Much worse than that, in my case. I've a bad habit of not typing the word in the first place leaving the sentence incoherent with or without auto. I hear the sentence in my head but the signal to the nerves does not always activate the muscle memory. I'll even read the sentence and "see" the word I've left out so post-editing is a must for me if I don't wish people to think I've completely lost my senses, lol.
