It's a good thing thay this was made by MGM instead of one of the French "novelle vague" filmmakers of the time. It could have ended up as a dark, black and white film, full of moral ambiguity and internal conflict, ...with a little nudity.
I always wanted to like that movie, but it comes off really flat to me. rather weightless...There is another movie with Chevalier and Caron I like much better called 'Fanny'
Had my Mom drop 8-year old me off at the theater to watch some monster movie. Sat down and on the screen came Maurice Chevalier singing about little girls (pervert). And yet I stayed for the whole thing. Unlike Flower Drum Song where I called and had her come pick me up.
Its fun...It comes off like one of those Disney movies from the 60s...That Darn Cat, Parent Trap (great flick) Swiss Family Robinson. Very kid friendly and breezy
Gigi is a fantastic movie with some problematic undertones when viewed through today's lens. That said, I've never not laughed at the bit about "insufficient poison".
Yeah, that. Sort of like GWTW is a backlash against the commodification of women (as illustrated by Gigi) in having a remarkably strong female protagonist, but hey, uh, slavery and the romantification of the southern architype. We learn, we grow.
Shifting to OT for a moment. Yesterday I talked about Ohio lege looking into phasing out the state income tax. I watched the show that was on again late last night and the first part of it was the Senate overriding two vetoes--the transgender care ban and the flavored tobacco ban--and let me say some of the debate was absolutely batshit insane. Just some of the most blatantly disingenuous arguments you could think of.
On the tax thing, it's not only the individual income tax but also the Commercial Tax; the host pointed out that eliminating both would cut 13 bil in revenue from the state general fund that's currently 86 bil (~15%). Insane.
I used to kind of hate Penn Jillette, the smug libertarian smug bastard. Then I read that interview. He's still smug (did I say smug yet?) but, yeah, that's some good thinkeratin' right there.
"What an absolutely smart fucker of an interesting cat! Wait, no. Fantastic interview with Penn Jillette on leaving libertarianism, patriotism, greed, success, and so, so much more."
I was wondering why Oklahoma was trying to ban pictures of tiny boobs, then I went back and re-read the headline. Some people just don't get the concept of "live and let live."
I have a new admiration for Penn Jilette. I remember the first dude who introduced me to Libertarianism. White and privileged, check. Also kind of an asshole in general. My mind was envisioning a world consisting largely of asphalt rubble from all the competing "road" makers...
i went thru a pirate phase a while back (BEFORE pirates of the caribbean) and ran across Gráinne. i really wanted to name my then new kitten Gráinne, but realized i would spend the entirety of her life having to spell and explain.
When I agreed with my kitten, that her name would be Máebh, I did not envision her many medical mishaps and adventures. Light spot in dark days, explaining that her name is spelled M a-fada e b h and then watching them try to pronounce that. Even if they heard it, their brains would not allow them to not pronounce it as spelled.
On the Walmart thing, though, yeah, they are the fucking worst. I work in the field of catching bad guys who do bad stuff with money, and Walmart from their gift cards to their bill payment service to their Western Union branches are 100% uninterested in doing even minimal fraud or anti-money laundering prevention. They just try to fob it all back off on the banks, but since the system they were using to do that was voluntary, the banks finally told them to get fucked until they fixed their practices, we weren't going to be their anti-financial crimes department anymore.
"Lever thinks Pete Buttigieg and the FAA need to get wayyyyy more up in Boeing’s shit."
Airplanes sound like critical infrastructure to me. Seems like Boeing could do with a nice hot bowl of being fucking nationalized for a while.
"Oklahoma weirdo wants to ban all pictures of naked butts and tittyboobies"
PornHub is aces at using its platform against nonsense like this. I am not a consumer of their wares, but I salute their use of weeners for great justice.
Pasta definitely makes me happier. We have it at least twice a week.
Tonight I'm making some with a pesto made from spinach leaf stems, since I have a gazillion of them left from making spanakopita this weekend. All those recipes for spinach dishes that include the instruction "Cut off the stems and discard"? Discard those recipes!
Also too, for pesto, since pine nuts are so expensive, one can use other nuts. I happen to have some pine nuts, but I'm extending them with pistachios, which is what are used in some Sicilian pesto anyway (then there's that pesto from Trapani that uses almonds and tomatoes, which is amazing). The combination of pine nuts and pistachios is a marvel. In fact, I think I prefer pesto made with pistachios. More alliterative, for one thing.
Also three, I've discovered a brand of pasta new to me - Felicetti - which is made in the Dolomites. It's hands down the best dry pasta I've ever found. It's pretty expensive for pasta, so it won't be a regular item in our kitchen. But for special pasta dishes, I will probably splurge once in a while.
One has to wonder if halting new LNG exports will lead to a glut in the US market for gas. The amount of natural gas already produced in the US gas already led to lower prices - does anyone think that shutting off more exports will lead to even lower prices ( or will there be price supports coming )?
And this as more municipalities (mine included) are phasing in bans on new gas hookups. Exxon or whothefuckever are gonna have to get used to the hand of the free market slapping them around in short order.
I'm ashamed to say that I had written off Penn Jillette after I'd heard he was a libertarian. Because, well, you know. Had I known he was capable of growth and self-reflection I might have assumed that he would eventually grow out of that stage of arrested development to which libertarians are doomed. I may not agree with him but I'd rather argue with someone who's capable of change than someone who does nothing but adhere to dogma. Good to know and good on you Mr Jillette.
Non-whole grain pasta is simply starch. That starch is easily and quickly broken down into the sugar components that make up the starch polymer. Saying you'll feel happy after you eat pasta is like saying you'll be happy eating a slice of chocolate cake. Our bodies reward us when we find and consume things rich is easily digestible carbs. One to two hours later, however....
Yeah, there are a few episodes of "Bullshit" that are really bad (the one on the ADA, ye gods), but I have read enough of his essays to perceive him as thoughtful but not always aware of his blind spots. I'm glad he's willing to continue working on them.
It always astounded me that he identified as a Libertarian because he seemed like a pretty thoughtful guy and libertarianism always struck me as not being able to withstand ten minutes of critical thought.
(Not really) ironic that encountering other libertarians made him realize how toxic it is.
I've found this is one of those places where the big "L" vs little "l" can make a lot of difference. The big "L" Libertarian party are just Koch Brothers wannabes or "Republicans who want to smoke pot", but I've met a lot of sincere small "l" types whose political philosophy is more of the "don't bother my shit and I won't bother your shit" variety that I can hang with, though the definitions of "bother" and "shit" are very important there.
Aaaand, this is the first time I noticed where the edit button is. As someone who's long-winded and prone to grammatical errors this is of great comfort. Unfortunately, nobody ever tells me anything <sad face emoji>.
Much worse than that, in my case. I've a bad habit of not typing the word in the first place leaving the sentence incoherent with or without auto. I hear the sentence in my head but the signal to the nerves does not always activate the muscle memory. I'll even read the sentence and "see" the word I've left out so post-editing is a must for me if I don't wish people to think I've completely lost my senses, lol.
Today's hed gif is a scene from "Gigi." More info here:

Wait, ...I'm rethinking this.
Jonathan Demme - Lachaille has Gigi over for dinner.
Needs more car chases.
And your problem is?
Needs some Jeanne Moreau.
Don't we all?
I always wanted to like that movie, but it comes off really flat to me. rather weightless...There is another movie with Chevalier and Caron I like much better called 'Fanny'

Maurice Chevalier singing "Thank Heaven" is a lot less creepy than Gérard Depardieu singing it, though ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110612/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_my%2520father%2520the%2520hero ).
I have mixed feelings about Flower Drum Song
One wonders if that movie had a problem in the UK.
In the US there was the novelist Fanny Fern then the comedienne Fanny Brice...
Betcha anything they changed the name for the UK release
(By the by, the exquisite Leslie Caron was hysterically funny in the film, "Father Goose" [1964], with Cary Grant.)
One of my favorites, too.
You know, I've never seen that one. Will rectify.
Its fun...It comes off like one of those Disney movies from the 60s...That Darn Cat, Parent Trap (great flick) Swiss Family Robinson. Very kid friendly and breezy
And some very snappy dialog!
harking back to the mercurial comedies of his early career...most definitely!
Not quite at "His Girl Friday" levels, but still pretty amusing!
My Dad's fave film. And I luv it, too!
Cary Grant said that his character in this flick (cranky, aging bastard) was the closest to his real-life persona.
A lovely film, but the song "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" is just too...
tell you what. loved this as a little girl. as a middle aged punk ass, it's hard to watch parts of it.
Yeah... there are a few issues with the movie, as much as I love it.
we rewatched the original ghost busters recently and THAT'S got issues.
Gigi is a fantastic movie with some problematic undertones when viewed through today's lens. That said, I've never not laughed at the bit about "insufficient poison".
You mean a film about an underage girl being groomed for prostitution and then marrys said very older man she prostituted to is problematic? SHUT UP!
Yeah, that. Sort of like GWTW is a backlash against the commodification of women (as illustrated by Gigi) in having a remarkably strong female protagonist, but hey, uh, slavery and the romantification of the southern architype. We learn, we grow.
So charming!
I love Gigi! Such a charming movie! "A TOPAZ? In my jewels?" The duet "I Remember it Well", "She is Not Thinking of Me".
And when he sings "Was I standing up too close or back too far?" I get a little misty every time.
"I remember it Well" is a brilliant musical exposition of the Rashomon type of phenomenon. "Objective truth" is a pretty limited concept.
that's the best segment in the movie
Yes to ''Gigi,'' no no never never uh uh uh to ''Gigli.''
You'll never think of turkey time in the same way ever again.
Gigli ruined Martin Brest who otherwise had a solid career.
"Gobble gobble"
My brain goes through the same loop every time that movie is mentioned.
"Gigli wasn't that bad, I'm not sure why it gets all-
No, wait, you're thinking of Jersey Girl again, because everyone ignored it after Gigli was so terrible "

Well that's surprising.
OMG, somehow I have the Load More button back! I wonder how long that will last?
I put water out for the birds yesterday as kind of an experiment. I forgot to bring it in. It kind of looks like it exploded last night. https://substack.com/profile/1687878-1d57a1d5931d/note/c-48384716?utm_source=notes-share-action&r=106di
We bought a heated bird bath years ago and the birds and squirrels love it.
We change it out for a regular concrete birdbath once it finally is our above freezing season.

we went with kerfuffle instead...

Kerfluffle is a fine name.

"Walmart does not in fact do that."
*primal screams in fraud investigator*
Is "weeners for great justice" a Fourth of July picknic thing?
I believe in an America where everyone may celebrate according to their own traditions, clothed or unclothed.
"What does NASA have to do with beavers?"
was the title of an email I received this very morning, from Atlas Obscura...
The burning questions, bright and early!

Ms. Carroll absolutely eviscerated PABA on "Good Morning America" today. "He's an empty suit". "The 'there' isn't there".
It was GLORIOUS.
I see she's going to be in Rachel tonight - making the rounds.
