Since God doesn't have a physical form, then being created in his image means that we have similar minds, which is evident from our ability to perceive the patterns and rhythms of the universe. Anyone who refuses to use their brain to more fully understand the world must be really pissing God off.

I wouldn't count on them being dead just yet. They still make up a large chunk of the Republican party base. The Religious right isn't going away anytime soon, and they will continue to push their agenda, with at least some varying degrees of success.
